Good Books to Read on a Rainy Day

September 13, 2019 by Meet Brenda 12 Comments

Now that September is here, it’s time to move away from summertime books and into fall and winter reads. In Texas, fall is full of rainy days, so I am always looking for good books to read on a rainy day. Here are some books I’ve read recently that are perfect books to read on a rainy day.

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure.

6 Great Books to Read on a Rainy Day

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure.

Deep North by Berry Kinster

I always love reading thrillers when it’s raining out. It makes me happy to be inside with my warm tea and a blanket rather than in the book, which is always full of drama and mystery. The author sent me a copy of Deep North personally (and signed it, which is pretty cool).  I’m always hesitant to read self-published books, but I was pleasantly surprised by Deep North. The plot follows a typical thriller involving a murder, suspense, and action. Although there were a few typos in my copy, the story was solid and the perfect thing to read when you want something light (but still have some action going on) on a rainy day. The main character’s name is Brenda, too, which is unusual to see in a book.

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure. All the Wrong Questions by Lemony Snicket

Fans of A Series of Unfortunate Events will love All the Wrong Questions based around the adventures of a young Lemony Snicket. I love the 1930s detective vibe of the story, and of course, all of the word definitions. I spend one whole weekend a few weeks ago tearing through the first three novels in the series. The slightly depressing mood of the books makes them ideal for rainy days.

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure. Witches Protection Program by Michael Phillip Cash

The author of Witches Protection Program often sends me his new stuff after I reviewed the Battle for Darracia series. Usually, he sends along a promo item with the book, and in this case, it was a broomstick pen. I love the plot for the Witches Protection Program, although it is pretty silly. The combination of witchcraft, mystery, and crime make it the perfect thing to read on a rainy day!

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure. Interview with the Vampire

Although Interview with the Vampire was written in the 1970s and 80s, I have never read through it until recently. This tale of a personalized vampire is the mother of most of the current vampire fiction, but the darker tone is more what I prefer in my vampire novels. If you haven’t read this classic vampire tale yet and you have even a passing interest in vampire fiction, then add it to your list! It’s the perfect thing to read on rainy fall days.

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure. Harry Potter

You can’t ever really escape Harry Potter. According to JK Rowling, 2015 is the year that Harry’s eldest child attends Hogwarts for the first time (which means Harry was about 23 or 24 when he was born. I guess in the wizarding world you get busy early). Now would be the perfect time to read about Harry’s adventures again! I’m reading through the series this year with my 4th grader, and I am so excited to share the series with her. Of course, she will probably roll her eyes at my enthusiasm, but that is what kids are for, right?

Raining outside? Then it is the perfect time to read! This post offers great books to read on a rainy day that will make your day full of adventure. Dirk Gently Books

These two Dirk Gently novels are about a “holistic” detective, who uses every available resource to solve crimes. He is psychic, but doesn’t believe in it, which makes for a hilarious combo. In both of the books, it is raining a good bit of the time, so they are the natural companion to rainy fall days.

The Best Books to Read in the Fall

September 9, 2019 by Meet Brenda 8 Comments

I’ve been really into fall this year, and I think it’s because temperatures still average about 90 degrees here every day. Being super into fall themes helps me feel like fall is actually here, even though it doesn’t feel like it where I am. Second, I walked into a mall last week (it was not even officially fall yet) and half of the stores were decorated for Christmas. There wasn’t even a Halloween decoration in sight. That is completely unacceptable to me. Fall deserves its time!

In honor of celebrating fall and rainy weather to the fullest, today, I thought I would share with you the books I believe are the best books to read in the fall. Let’s keep that fall spirit as alive as possible!

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall.

The Best Books to Read in the Fall

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall.

Harry Potter

It’s probably the back-to-school start and all the rain, but Harry Potter will forever mean fall to me. This year, I’m reading through Harry Potter with my kids, so I’m excited.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall. The Hunger Games

Something about adventures and revolution seems to go along in the fall. I’m not sure why The Hunger Games Trilogy reminds me of the fall, except perhaps because I first read it in the fall? At any rate, I love reading these books when it’s wet and cold outside.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall. The October Country

The October Country is a short story collection by Ray Bradbury, with one story in particular titled “The October Country.” There is a pretty obvious connection to fall in this story.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall.Redwall

Redwall is all about food, and if you have never read the books, they are worth it for the meal ideas alone. I always feel so hungry after reading Redwall. I love the food descriptions which sound like the perfect thing to serve on Thanksgiving.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall.A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events is slightly spooky, which makes it perfect for fall weather. I’m excited and a little nervous for the new reboot arriving on Netflix soon.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall.Howl’s Moving Castle

Stories of magic and adventure remind me of fall. I think if I had to guess which time spirits would walk the earth, I would definitely pick fall. I guess out ancestors felt that way too, which is why Halloween exists! Get it all in Howl’s Moving Castle.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall.Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke and Mirrors is a somewhat depressing short story collection by Neil Gaiman. When I read these stories, I feel like I am out in the mist somewhere with something spooky about to happen.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall. The Gemma Doyle Trilogy

The deep primal way that magic is addressed in this series of books makes The Gemma Doyle Trilogy one of my favorite YA magic series. Although it has creeped me out on several occasions, the writing captures the spirit of a cold, English fall.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall. The Lord of the Rings

What better way to celebrate fall weather than by curling up and reading epic adventures? After Harry Potter, I’ll probably have to tackle The Lord of the Rings series with my kids. It may be 10 years from now.

Love books? Love the fall? You won't want to miss this list of books I revisit every fall featuring the best books to read in the fall. The Time Traveler’s Wife

Time travel is weird, and The Time Traveler’s Wife is weirder. It appeals to my geeky science side and my love of magic and slightly depressing literature at the same time. This book belongs on any fall reading list.

Tell me, what are your favorite books to re-read in the fall? Or do you prefer to read new books every year?

Winter-Themed Books to Read When It’s Cold Outside

January 9, 2019 by Meet Brenda 7 Comments

Seasonal books are always available, but I don’t find myself caring too much about setting unless it is cold outside. Then, I want to read winter-themed books all about ice and snow.

It may be because Texas winters are so mild, but books about winter are always something I like to read after the holiday season. They are also perfect to read over winter vacation.

If you also like to read winter-themed books when it’s cold out, check out this list. You’ll find everything from children’s literature to winter-themed horror.

<<Find more book lists here!>>

Scroll to the bottom of the post to add your bookish links to the Lit Lovers link up!

These winter-themed books feature amazing literature that goes beyond flakes of snow. In these winter books, winter is essential to the plot.

Winter-Themed Books to Read When It’s Cold Outside

This collection of winter-themed books feature an amazing assortment of literature that goes beyond just a few flakes of snow. In many of these winter books, winter is essential to the plot and entire feel of the story.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is one of my favorite winter-themed books. I love this story. I first read this story when I was about 10 years old, and I’ve read it many times sense. It the perfect blend of magic and possibility and I enjoy revisiting this story most winters.

The Golden Compass

I read The Golden Compass as an adult, so it didn’t feel quite as magical to me as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but it still captures the feeling of cruel winter and epic adventures. I prefer reading sweeping, epic adventures when I read winter-themed books, which makes this a perfect fit.

If I Stay

If I Stay is quite sad. It is essential a melancholy teen romance novel. Although I didn’t really like the movie (somehow movies highlight depression without redeeming joy), I really loved the book. The writing perfectly captures the feeling of winter and I love the color contrasts in the descriptions.

Trapped

I haven’t read Trapped, but it looks like the perfect wintertime read. What happens when teens are snowed in at a school for an extended period? How would they survive? I like winter survivalist stories, so I’m adding this book to my list.

Let It Snow

If you are a fan of John Green’s books, then you will definitely want to read Let It Snow. This book is a collection of three winter-themed YA romances from popular YA authors including John Green.

Stone Mattress

Only the story called Alphinland is winter-themed in Stone Mattress, but Margaret Atwood is such an excellent writer you can’t go wrong reading the other stories alongside the book about winter.

The Woman in White

I’m not sure how much of this story is a winter-themed book, but it has everything I like to read during the winter. The Woman in White is a classic Victorian Gothic story, and one I’ll be adding to my list of books to read in the winter.

These winter-themed books feature amazing literature that goes beyond flakes of snow. In these winter books, winter is essential to the plot.

A Song of Ice and Fire

All of the books in A Song of Ice and Fire have some winter, but from what I remember, A Feast for Crows has the most winter-themed content. Everything about the night’s watch, the white walkers (or Others, as they are usually called in the books), and the Wall make perfect shivery winter reading. It also adds in just a bit of horror, which is ideal for winter-themed books.

Labyrinths

These winter-themed books feature amazing literature that goes beyond flakes of snow. In these winter books, winter is essential to the plot.
Labyrinths is a creepy book filed with short stories that will chill the spine. Fans of classic psychological horror should enjoy this book.

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow

With a name like Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow, you know this book is all about winter. This winter-themed fantasy is slightly influenced by the Beauty and the Beast, and will transport you to a magical land of adventure and fur-lined boots.

Winter’s Tale

I have yet to read Winter’s Tale, but the premise has made me add this to my TBR pile pronto. Aside from the strange-sounding love affair between an old man and a girl (hopefully they mean she is a young woman), it sounds like an enchanting story that will haunt you long after you read it.

These winter-themed books feature amazing literature that goes beyond flakes of snow. In these winter books, winter is essential to the plot.

The Dark is Rising

The The Dark Is Rising series is based around ancient Celtic and Nordic folklore and reads like a semi-modern retelling of the King Arthur story. If you love diving into stories about ancient religions and secret doorways between worlds that tingle the spine, you won’t want to miss this series. The first book is set mainly in the winter. And if you’ve seen the movie, don’t let that stop you from reading the book.

These winter-themed books feature amazing literature that goes beyond flakes of snow. In these winter books, winter is essential to the plot.

The Shining

I actually didn’t know that The Shining was a book set in winter, but since it is, I’m adding it to my list of winter-themed books. I haven’t read much horror in my life, but I think I’m ready to dive into some- at least stories that are psychological in nature. I don’t care as much for hack and slash stories.

What winter-themed books are your favorite?

The Ultimate List of the Best Christmas Stories Ever

November 26, 2018 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

best christmas stories square

It’s here! This will be the very last Quote Me Thursday post of 2014! I am taking off next week for Christmas, then I am also taking off the next week for New Year’s Day. We’ll be back again with more awesome quotes and social sharing on January 8th (which is my 10th wedding anniversary!).

This week, I thought I would do something a little different and share the best Christmas stories ever with you. After all, Christmas is the best time to curl up with a good, festive book!

This post contains affiliate links.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

This tale about how 6 unruly children turn the church Christmas pageant upside-down is heartwarming and reminds us that appearances are not everything. I first read this story when I was about 9 and it seemed to me that my siblings and I were a lot like the “bad” children in the story. I loved how in the end (spoilers), everyone embraced the chaos and had a great Christmas.

A Christmas Carol

What list of the best Christmas stories wouldn’t include this classic? One of my favorite things about A Christmas Carol is that it is a ghost story. In the song, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” the lyrics talk about how ghost stories are a part of Christmas, but we don’t do that much anymore- at least not in America. A Christmas Carol is probably the only true ghost story that anyone ever tells over Christmas. If you haven’t seen the muppet version, you need to add that to your movie list this year.

gift of the magiThe Gift of the Magi

The Gift of the Magi is one of my favorite love stories of all time. The young couple is in-love and want to give their spouse a nice Christmas gift, but they have no money. So, they sacrifice the most important thing to them to benefit the person they love.

I first read this story when I was about 13, and now, being the cynical soulless person that I am, I figure if someone did do this, the other spouse probably would have settled for the $5 gift, and then where would they be. But it is still a sweet story.

The Little Match Girl

I suppose The Little Match Girl is sort of a ghost story. The little girl does die in the end. I don’t know why, but I loved this story even as a small child. I felt bad for the girl, but I liked the story. I was a pretty strange child.

The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

If there is a Christmas-themed Sherlock Holmes adventure, count me in. In The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle a rare store goes missing around Christmas. The man who lost the jewel winds up finding it in the mouth of his Christmas goose, and Sherlock and Watson set off on an adventure to determine how it happened.

The Night Before Christmas

If you are super-traditional, you probably read this story every year on Christmas Eve. One of my favorite versions is this one, because it is full of beautiful pictures.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is one of the only Dr. Seuss stories that I actually like. I know everyone thinks he was so amazing and the art is awesome, but I’m not a huge fan of the art or books that rhyme. The Grinch, however, makes a perfect character for such a weird art style and the rhyming seems better in a Christmas story. Plus, Cindy Lou Who is cute.

skippingSkipping Christmas

Skipping Christmaswas made into a movie in 2004 (Christmas with the Kranks). I don’t know why they changed the name. I like this book because it deals with a lot of the stress of the holiday season in a fun way as the couple tries to escape the mayhem in their traditional suburban neighborhood.

Little Women

Although not much in Little Women is about Christmas, with a first line that goes, “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” it is forever a Christmas story in my mind. Something about the old fashioned skirts, the letters, and giving their Christmas dinner to a less-fortunate family is what I remember most from this book.

Let It Snowlet it snow

This Christmas anthology offers three Christmas stories written by YA masters John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle. The stories are all romance-themed, which is a must during Christmas!

The Trouble with Angels

This cute story follows the adventures of three angels as they visit the City of Angels to grant three Christmas prayers- ideally without the help of divine intervention. But it isn’t long before the three angels might need divine intervention themselves.

Christmas Cookie Murder

Honestly, why wouldn’t you want to read a book called Christmas Cookie Murder? In this story, when one side of a cookie recipe rivalry is found murdered, a whole town is left wondering? Did the rival murder her for the cookie recipe?

Christmas at Thompson Hall

Christmas at Thompson Hall is an anthology of Victorian Christmas celebrations. To me, nothing says Christmas more than Victorian stories, so I love this anthology. Get the Penguin edition from this year, if you can, because it is the prettiest.

anneAnne of Green Gables

I know only a small portion of Anne of Green Gables takes place at Christmas, but it was such a turning point for her it seems like it is most of the book. On this Christmas, Anne’s guardians finally decide to allow her to live a little, and naturally, magic happens.

The Autobiography of Santa Claus

This is a cute “true” story on the origins of the man in the red suit. If you are big Santa lovers at your house, you will enjoy adding this book to your collection.

13 Classic Must-Reads for Middle Grade Girls

July 9, 2018 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

13 classic middle grade must reads 400

The American Girls Stories  by Various

These stories are the books based on the fictional doll characters who live in a specific time. When I was seven or eight I loved these fun stories about 10 year old girls living in a historical environment.

The Ramona Collection by Beverly Cleary

These books feature a strong-willed girl from the age of five to nine. In each story she faces a life problem and eventually things all work out.

The Boxcar Children Bookshelf by Gertrude Chandler Warner and others

These short stories are fun mysteries for elementary-aged children. When I was a child I would read up to three a day.

Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder: Girls interested in the past will enjoy this series about a girl growing up in the late 1800s as a pioneer. I loved these as a child, but my younger sisters did not. It probably depends on the personality of the girl.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

This is a fun story about a girl who is the daughter of a pirate who lives alone on an island. She gets into all kinds of trouble and adventures with her two friends.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald

This story is about a lady who lives in a house with dozens of children. She has magic cures for each childhood problem, fault and ailment. This is a fun series that younger girls should enjoy.

Bobbsey Twins Complete Series by Laura Lee Hope

This series is a selection of syndicated books about two sets of twins in one family. They get into all kinds of adventures and usually figure out a mystery by the end of the story.

The Complete Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maude Montgomery

This is a period story about a young 11 year old orphan girl with a fiery temper. She has many adventures learning to control her temper as she grows up. Children should also enjoy the seventh volume in the series, Rainbow Valley, about Anne’s children.

Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heidi is a story of another orphan girl who lives with her grumpy grandfather. She is invited to live with an ill girl as a companion, and throughout the story she helps the ill girl get better, and her grandfather become loving.

The Secret Garden  by Frances Hodgson Burnett

This story follows the adventures of orphan Mary Lennox as she learns to hold her temper, finds a secret garden, and helps her cousin learn to walk after being ill all his life.

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

This story follows orphan (there are a lot of orphans in older stories I guess) Sarah Crewe as she lives in a boarding school while her father is away at war. When he dies, she has to live as a maid in the attic, but she never looses her princess mindset.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events  by Lemony Snicket

This series is enjoyable for boys and girls. In this series of 13 books, four orphans must find the secret to their parent’s mysterious deaths. Lemony Snicket also works in unusual vocabulary words into the books.

The Chronicles of Narnia  by C.S. Lewis

This is also a great series for boys or girls. I just forgot about it last week. In these seven books different sets of children travel to Narnia at different points in Narnia’s history. The story is allegorical for C.S. Lewis’ views on Christianity and heaven.
