O Winter! ruler of the inverted year, . . . I crown thee king of intimate delights, Fireside enjoyments, home-born happiness, And all the comforts that the lowly roof Of undisturb’d Retirement, and the hours Of long uninterrupted evening, know.

In seed-time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.
–William Blake

We feel cold, but we don’t mind it, because we will not come to harm. And if we wrapped up against the cold, we wouldn’t feel other things, like the bright tingle of the stars, or the music of the Aurora, or best of all the silky feeling of moonlight on our skin. It’s worth being cold for that.
–Philip Pullman

Brew me a cup for a winter’s night.
For the wind howls loud, and the furies fight;
Spice it with love and stir it with care,
And I’ll toast your bright eyes, my sweetheart fair.

so much like stars
filling the dark trees
that one could easily imagine
its reason for being was nothing more
than prettiness.”
― Mary Oliver

“Frost grows on the window glass, forming whorl patterns of lovely translucent geometry. Breathe on the glass, and you give frost more ammunition. Now it can build castles and cities and whole ice continents with your breath’s vapor. In a few blinks you can almost see the winter fairies moving in. But first, you hear the crackle of their wings.”
― Vera Nazarian

“Because the birdsong might be pretty,
But it’s not for you they sing,
And if you think my winter is too cold,
You don’t deserve my spring.”
― Erin Hanson

“Snow harder! Snow more!
Snow blizzards galore!
I can’t get enough
Of the fluffy white stuff!
Snow! Snow! Snow!

Snow a ton! Snow a heap!
Snow ten feet deep!
I wouldn’t cry
If it snowed til July.
Snow! Snow! Snow!”
― Paul F. Kortepeter

winter quotes

“In the winter she curls up around a good book and dreams away the cold.”
― Ben Aaronovitch

“I love snow for the same reason I love Christmas: It brings people together while time stands still. Cozy couples lazily meandered the streets and children trudged sleds and chased snowballs. No one seemed to be in a rush to experience anything other than the glory of the day, with each other, whenever and however it happened.”
― Rachel Cohn

10 Christmas Carols from Around the World to Add to Your Holiday Playlist (Quote Me Thursday)

December 10, 2014 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

christmas carols from around the world

I love Christmas music; Christmas songs have some of the best holiday quotes! This year, rather than post the same lines from the classic Christmas carols that you could probably recite while hanging upside down over a boiling pot of water, I’ve decided to list some of my favorite lyrics from Christmas songs from around the world instead.

And I’m including video to these songs as well so you can add these alternative Christmas songs to your playlist this year. Also, thanks to Google for translating some of the more obscure lyrics. You can definitely tell that Christmas is a more Christian holiday in the rest of the world based on these lyrics.

Scroll to the bottom of the post for the book and quote link-up!

Zither Carol (Czech)

Girls and boys – Leave your toys – Make no noise
Kneel at his crib and worship him
At thy shrine – Child divine – We are thine
Our Savior’s here
Chorus:
“Hallelujah” the church bells ring
“Hallelujah” the angels sing
“Hallelujah” from everything
All must draw near

On that day – Far away – Jesus lay
Angels were watching ’round his head
Holy Child – Mother mild – Undefiled
We sing thy praise
repeat 3 lines of chorus
Our hearts we raise

Tell me who you are child- Spain

Translated lyrics:
Tell me who you are Child
all dress in white.
I am of the Virgin Mary
and the Holy Spirit.

Resound with joy
the songs of my land
and experience the Child of God
he was born on Christmas Eve .

Christmas Eve is coming , tururú
Christmas Eve goes.
And we go we , tururú
and will not be back again.

Tell me who you are Child
and if your name Jesus.
I am love in the manger
and suffering on the Cross.

Resound with joy
the songs of my land
and experience the Child of God
he was born on Christmas Eve.

Oh What Wonderful News (Romanian)

Oh, what wonderful news!
In Viflaim we were shown
Today was born
The picturings of – started
How prophets said.

That the Viflaim Maria
Committed journey ,
In a small dwelling ,
Near – that city ,
She gave birth to the Messiah .

On his son’s name,
Father sent Him into the world,
To be born
And to grow,
To save us.

Rejoice (Latin)

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Christ is born of the Virgin Mary; Rejoice!

The time of grace has come for which we have prayed
Let us devoutly sing songs of joy.

God is made man, while nature wonders
The world is renewed by Christ the King.

The closed gate of Ezekiel has been passed through
From where the light has risen (the East), salvation is found.

Therefore, let our assembly sing praises now at this time of purification
Let it bless the Lord: greetings to our King.

“Gesù bambino- (Italy)

This is actually one of my favorite Christmas tunes. I had no idea it was originally Italian.

When blossoms flower e’er ‘mid the snows,
Upon a winter night,
Was born the child, the christmas rose,
The king of love and light.
The angels sang, the shepherds sang,
The grateful earth rejoiced;
And at his blessed birth the stars
Their exultation voiced.

Chorus:
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
Christ the lord.

Again the heart with rapture glows
To greet the holy night,
That gave the world it’s christmas rose,
Its king of love and light
Let ev’ry voice acclaim his name,
The grateful chorus swell
From paradise to earth he came
That we with him might dwell.

The Wexford Carol (Irish)

Good people all, this Christmas-time,
Consider well and bear in mind
What our good God for us has done,
In sending His beloved Son.
With Mary holy we should pray
To God with love this Christmas Day:
In Bethlehem upon that morn
There was a blessed Messiah born.

Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep
Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep;
To whom God’s angels did appear,
Which put the shepherds in great fear.
“Prepare and go,” the angels said,
“To Bethlehem, be not afraid;
For there you’ll find, this happy morn,
A princely Babe, sweet Jesus born.”

Merry Christmas Everywhere (German)

Google had a bit of trouble translating this one, so a few lines may not be right.

” Merry Christmas everywhere ! ”
Toned through the air joyful sound .
Christmas Sound, Christmas Tree,
Christmas scent in each room!

” Merry Christmas everywhere ! ”
Toned through the air joyful sound .
Therefore all
bustle in the Jubelton ,
because it is the Light of the World
of the Father’s throne .

Merry Christmas everywhere
Light on dark paths ,
our light are you ;
because you lead
Light on dark paths ,
our light are you ;
because you lead ,
a seller to rest.

” Merry Christmas everywhere ” …
What are we on the other ?
What is done
is done for you ,
that everyone must confess,
Christ child came to me.

Christmas Has Come (Finnish)

Quietly , quietly, Christmas bells will ring .
Through the spaces echoing song rejoicing :
Jesus has come !

Quietly , quietly, Christmas bells will ring .
Heavenward tending radiating flashes a series of Starlets :
Jesus has come !

Quietly , quietly, Christmas bells will ring .
Bright Christmas candles gently hymyvät :
Jesus has come !

Quietly , quietly, Christmas bells will ring .
Echoes from the children’s song
brightly and jingling:
Christmas has come!

He is Born the Divine Child (French)

He is born the divine child,
Play oboe, resonate musette.
He is born the divine child,
Let’s all sing his accession.
For more than four thousand years
We’ve promised by the prophets,
For more than four thousand years
We’ve been waiting for this happy time.
A stable is his lodging,
A bit of hay is his little bed,
A stable is his lodging,
For a god such a humble thing.
O Jesus, o all powerful king,
Such a little child you are,
O Jesus, o all powerful king,
Rule completely over us.

The Boar’s Head Carol (England)

The boar’s head in hand bear I
Bedecked with bay and rosemary;
So I pray you my masters be merry,
Quot estis in convivio [as many as are at the feast].
Chorus
Caput apri defero [I bring in the boar’s head]
Reddens laudes Domino [Giving thanks to the lord]
Caput apri defero
Reddens laudes Domino
The boar’s head as I understand
Is the rarest dish in all the land,
Which thus bedecked with a gay garland,
Let us servire cantico [serve it with a song].
Chorus
Our steward hath provided this
In honour of the King of bliss,
Which on this day to be served is
In Reginensis atrio [In Queen’s Hall].
