Literary Junkies Book Chat (Lit Lovers Link Party)

February 24, 2016 by Meet Brenda 2 Comments

I’m part of the online book club Literary Junkies, which meets virtually on Facebook. Each month, we have question challenges that help us get to know each other better! Today, this book chat is all about current reads and our thoughts on Harper Lee.
Love books? Love talking about books? Don't miss this edition of the Daily Mayo Book Chat and thoughts on Harper Lee.

Literary Junkies Book Chat

Join in the fun and answer these book chat questions on your own blog or in the comments!

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.
Right now, I’m taking a break from fiction. The most recent book I’ve been reading is a collection of short stories called Dangerous Women, which has tales of strong women from some of the current popular writers in several genres. There is something for everyone in this collection.
2. Have you ever read a book that made you want to immediately travel to that destination?
I love the setting for Howl’s Moving Castle. I would love to visit that universe.
3. What is your ideal reading spot?
I used to love reading in trees. Now, I  would probably find it highly uncomfortable. I’d love to read on a beach (if the sunlight wasn’t too strong) or in a cozy home library. I hope one day to have a home with a library with a big window seat.
4. If you wrote a memoir, what would the title be?
I can’t imagine I would ever write a memoir. I don’t really like reading them either. I prefer biographies. Memoirs seem a little self-centered, I guess?
5. One of our great literary giants has recently passed, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee. Did you read the book? Thoughts/opinions. What about Go Set a Watchman?
I’ve read both To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman. I read To Kill a Mockingbird before I was old enough to understand it, so I didn’t really care for it. But although many people hated Go Set a Watchman, I liked it. I thought it gave an interesting prospective to why Atticus made the decisions that he did in his career. I know it isn’t politically correct now, but society is changing for the better, so it makes sense to me that a person from that generation would make choices in the way he did.

Why Having Books You Didn’t Like is a Good Thing

February 4, 2016 by Meet Brenda 4 Comments

What happens when “good books” are the books you didn’t like?

As followers in the book world, we run across a lot of good books. We read reviews, follow new book releases, and keep up with the latest reading trends. I usually plan what I will be reading for the year several months in advance.
But sometimes, a hyped book or “good” book lets you down when you read it.

There are some good books you didn’t like. These books are the ones everyone else seems to adore and recommend the heck out of, but when you get to them, you are just left scratching your head.

Why Having Books You Didn’t Like is a Good Thing

Sometimes the book world tends to be snobbish.

We love the books we love so much that we throw shade at people who didn’t love our beloved stories. However, not all books are written for all people. If you have books you didn’t like that other people did, it is simply a sign that you know your own taste.

I don’t agree that there is such a thing as a book that will be enjoyed by everyone. Certain books try new things which is always positive, and certain books appeal to different audiences. For example, I never plan to read any books about child molestation, although some people might say writing about that content would make a “good” book.

For me, what makes a good book is something that is enjoyable to read, makes you think a bit (either about life or the story itself), and presents a story in a new way. This will obviously mean drastically different things to different people. That is how my favorite book can be Les Miserables but another person’s favorite can be Captain Underpants.

Here are some good books I didn’t like:

All of these books I felt were over-hyped and lacking in some way. If you feel differently, share why you loved these stories in the comments! I’m always up for debating the pros and cons of certain books.

We Are Pirates

When I read We Are Pirates, I really wanted to like it because I love Daniel Handler so much. His stories are full of humor and perception, but I felt that this particular book was missing those elements (although they were there in a muted way). I almost felt like he wrote the book just to break away from what he was famous for (Lemony Snicket books), but it sort of read like someone trying to be something they were not.

The Girl on the Train

I am actually sad that this book is becoming a movie when there are so many excellent books that could have been made into movies. The Girl on the Train (the girl herself) was a terrible person and I hated her. I realize not all main characters have to be good, but I felt depressed after reading the book. Nothing stuck out as clever or unusual about the story. I wasn’t impressed and I am not sure why it was named one of the best books from last year.

Outlander

While not a big fan of romance novels in general, the time travel angle made me read this one. However, the wife abuse, rape, and extreme violence made me dislike Outlander. Even if such things were “period” as the author claimed, the events were presented in a way that gave me the sense that these were supposed to be the “good old days,” which I cannot get on board with.

Paper Towns

Before I knew John Green was John Green from the Internet, I read Paper Towns. I was not impressed. It is boring and his teens are ridiculously philosophical, naive, and impossibly cool at the same time.

I really liked The Fault in Our Stars, however, probably because of where I was in life when I read it. It may also be a better book.

Later Game of Thrones Books

I was all on board with the first three Game of Thrones books (I do know they are Song of Ice and Fire books, GoT is catchier, though). Since then, I feel like the plot has been totally derailed and some serious editing has been ignored. We do not need to read multiple pages on food or random conversations or thoughts. I highly doubt at this point that GRRM is making each scene that necessary for the greater plot as a whole. The story is now lost in the vast sea of individual scenes.

The Goldfinch

In short, I thought The Goldfinch was much too long. It felt like two unrelated books tied together with thin twine. The link was not strong enough to hold my interest.

My Favorite Reads of 2015: Literary Junkies

December 29, 2015 by Meet Brenda 4 Comments

I can hardly believe December is over! This year has flown by for me. Today, as part of the Literary Junkies link party, I’m sharing my favorite reads of 2015 and some other book chat with you.

If you are curious, the Lit Lovers link party starts back up again January 7th and I am looking forward to see what you have been up to since I’ve been on vacation!

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!

This Month’s Questions: Favorite Reads of 2015

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

Right now, I’m reading The Raven Boys, recommended to me by a cousin. She said it was one of her favorite series, and so far, it’s shaping up to be a pretty interesting story! It mixes a bit of Arthurian legends with new age magic, all combined together in a way that feels magic without being silly. I like it when books are able to do this, so I’ll probably end up finishing the series if I like where it goes in this book.

2. What were your favorite reads of 2015?

I read a lot of things in 2015, mostly in binge batches. This year, I would go through periods where I read nothing at all, then I would read about four books at once. I can’t remember everything I read (I was pretty bad about reviewing my favorite reads of 2015), but right now, four books that I really enjoyed spring to mind.

Carry On

Carry On is the book written by Rainbow Rowell to go along with Fangirl, and it is basically Harry Potter fanfiction come to life. It is everything I ever wanted from my fanfiction and was extremely nostalgic to read.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post! The Martian

The Martian made me feel smarter when I read it, but at the same time, made me laugh. I don’t know that I’ve ever run across that in a book before.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!Ashfall

I actually just got Ashfall for Christmas and finished it a couple of days ago. Ashfall is based on the possibility of the large volcano in Yellowstone National park exploding and pushing the entire world (more or less) into years-long winter.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!Me Before You

Me Before You explores the question of whether it is possible to fall in love with someone completely based on their brain and what happens to romantic feelings when one of the partners is completely disabled. I don’t know if I was extremely happy where the plot ended up, but it made me think long after the book ended, which is always the sign of a good book in my opinion!
3. What was your book-read total for 2015? Did you make your goal for the year?

I don’t like setting up goals for number of books. I think it is better to read at your own pace than feel like a failure for not reaching a reading goal. I don’t know how many books I read this year, but it was far fewer than many other years.
4. How many books would you like to read in 2016?

As many as I want to/can.
5. What is the number one book sitting on your Must Read list right now?

Well, my book swap partner, Jennifer of Busy Being Jennifer got me the last book in the Tiffany Aching series, so I need to start over again and complete it from book one this year. Jennifer also made me a beautiful hand-stitched embroidered wall hanging with a book theme, which was totally amazing.

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

I’m going to be honest and say that I’m not really reading anything right now. I finished Me Before You and The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry and I have’t really gotten into anything since.

2. Now that we’re coming up to the holidays, are there any books you like to return to or remind you of childhood?

Little Women has always been one of my favorite Christmas books. The first few chapters are about Christmas, and it is always stuck in my mind as Christmas story. I also loved reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever when I was young. I really enjoy giving both of those stories a re-read around Christmas if I can.

3. Do you have any new books on your wishlist?

I have purchased most of the books that I really wanted to read this year, but there is always room for a few more on my shelf!

  • Right now, I am in love with all of the lovely hardback editions of classic books.
  • This edition of the Anne of Green Gables series is definitely on my wishlist right now.7
  • These Jane Austens are absolutely amazing and I’ve been collecting Puffin Classics for a while now. I already have Anne of Green Gables(it is impossible to have too many version of Anne) and Black Beauty.

4. Favorite book you’ve ever received as a gift?

I think people are scared to purchase books for me right now. It’s been a while since anyone has. I think my favorite book gift was actually not for me, but for my brothers. When I was about 12, my uncle bought my brothers some of the The Thrawn Trilogy books, and that was probably my favorite book gift ever. Also in that bundle, Ender’s Game. My entire teenhood was spent mostly inside those books, so they definitely shaped who I am today and forever.

5. Favorite book centered around the holidays?

I don’t think I really have one favorite Christmas book in particular. But these are my favorite Christmas books.

Literary Junkies: Books I Loved and Hated in School

October 26, 2015 by Meet Brenda 4 Comments

Once again, it’s time for Literary Junkies! I love being in this book club. It’s been so much fun! If you are looking for an online book club to join, join our group here!

Not all required reading is bad. Take a look at the books I loved and hated in school in this month's edition of Literary Junkies!

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

I tend to binge-read books, so I’m actually not currently reading anything, but I did just finish Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. It is basically a Harry Potter fanfiction, which has all of the elements of a fanfiction that you really hope is in there. The mix of drama, humor, and romance is perfect for a fanfiction-style book. I recommend it to anyone who has ever read Harry Potter, magical school stories, or fanfiction in general.

2. What was your favorite book you had to read in school and which was your least favorite?

I was homeschooled my entire life, and I know I had required reading, but I loved reading so much as a child, I never felt oppressed by any fiction books that I had to read- expect one author. One of the literature programs I used growing up was focused on reading really old, out-of-print books. One series was written by Horatio Alger, Jr. These books were basically the YA of their day. Every story was exactly the same even though they were always about different characters. In every store, a young boy would be poor, kind, and heroic. He would save some sort of rich woman/man. The rich woman/man would reward him with a job or in some cases, the marriage to the rich person’s daughter. They were all like that, and none of them were good. It just goes to show you that not all “classic” books are good.

My favorite required reading book was definitely Les Miserables. It remains one of my favorite books to this day. I love how there are about four different stories wrapped up together. If you want a drama, read Fantine’s story. If you want a revenge story, read Jean’s part. If you want a romance, read about Cosette. If you want French history, read all the narration. It’s pretty awesome.

3. What is your favorite book that was turned into a movie? Were you happy with the movie?

The Princess Bride is my all-time favorite book-turned-movie. Of course, I saw the movie first, since it was made the year I was born, but I always felt like it captured everything you want a book translation to be. The Neverending Story is also a wonderful book-turned-movie translation. I think I love both of those stories more than any recent book-to-movie transformation. What I appreciate about these older formats is that they were able to capture the spirit of the book without making detrimental changes but were also not a complete word-for-word remake of the book. I’ve found that I actually dislike it when movies have all of the same dialogue as the book (The Fault in Our Stars) and also when they add way to much (The Hobbit).

4. Which book do you wish would be turned into a movie?

Honestly, I’m not sure. I would love to see more of the Ender books on the big screen, because I think that is a story format that would go well with movie format. But other than that, I’m not sure that any other book I’ve read recently needs to be a movie. Not every book should become a movie. However, I would definitely go see the Gregor movies if they were ever made. I would love to see some epic bat battles on a movie screen.

5. Did you set any reading goals for 2015? How are you doing with them?

I didn’t have any reading goals other than to read more diversity in books this year. I’ve read a few things from other countries and one book about a male/male relationship, but other than that, I think I’ve failed a bit in this goal.
