10 of the Best Game of Thrones Quotes

January 28, 2019 by Meet Brenda 7 Comments

Can't wait until the next Game of Thrones episode? Satiate your hunger with 10 of the best quotes from Game of Thrones- book edition.

One of the drawbacks (if you can even call it that) of marriage is that I have yet to watch the Game of Thrones season premier for this season. Why? Because Josh has been working incredibly late every night this week.

This means, that I’ve had to tiptoe carefully around the Internet making sure I don’t run into any spoilers. I hate spoiling things for myself.

Even though I can’t watch the show yet, I still want to celebrate Game of Thrones season, since it’s my favorite TV show right now.

In honor of Game of Thrones season 5, here are some of the quotes that I think are the best Game of Thrones quotes from A Song of Ice and Fire. All quotes are taken from the books, rather than the show.

-Jojen

“When you play the game of thrones you either win or you die, there is no middle ground.”

Although Thanksgiving is just around the corner, most of us have already started to think about Christmas (I just ordered some presents today!). It’s never a bad time to read some quotes about Christmas from books, no matter what time of year it is. I like to use these Christmas book quotes on the chalkboard hanging in our hallway. It makes me feel much smarter.

–Laura Ingalls Wilder

“Christmas is like candy; it slowly melts in your mouth sweetening every taste bud, making you wish it could last forever.”
–Richelle E. Goodrich

“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!”
–Charles Dickens

― Dale Evans Rogers

“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given–when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”

10 Creepy Halloween Quotes from Horror Authors and Poets

If you are looking for creepy Halloween quotes, these Halloween quotes from authors are just the thing to set the mood and are totally whiteboard worthy.

If you are looking for creepy Halloween quotes, these Halloween quotes from authors are just the thing to set the mood and are totally whiteboard worthy.

This time of year, I’m looking forward to Halloween. I love Halloween not just for the holiday, but what it represents. The full beginning of fall, cold weather, and the best holidays of the year (plus, Christmas break is just around the corner!).

When it is cool outside, I love reading horror books. I guess there is something about the turning of the seasons that make reading spooky stories more fun. These creepy Halloween quotes will get you in the mood for cool weather within seconds.

10 Creepy Halloween Quotes from Horror Authors and Poets

If you are looking for creepy Halloween quotes, these Halloween quotes from authors are just the thing to set the mood and are totally whiteboard worthy.

“Death twitches my ear;
‘Live,’ he says…
‘I’m coming.”
― Virgil

“The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.”
― Matthew Woodring Stover

“Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.”
― Cormac McCarthy

“I’ll tell you now. That silence almost beat me. It’s the silence that scares me. It’s the blank page on which I can write my own fears. The spirits of the dead have nothing on it. The dead one tried to show me hell, but it was a pale imitation of the horror I can paint on the darkness in a quiet moment.”
― Mark Lawrence

“He stepped fully into the house. The air inside was cool on his skin. He turned, expecting the front door to close on its own. But it stayed open, as it was supposed to. He shook his head, chiding himself for letting an old house spook him. He walked into the kitchen. Behind him, the front door slammed shut.”
― Robert Liparulo

“The Devil pulls the strings which make us dance;
We find delight in the most loathsome things;
Some furtherance of Hell each new day brings,
And yet we feel no horror in that rank advance.”
― Charles Baudelaire

“Here is a list of terrible things,
The jaws of sharks, a vultures wings
The rabid bite of the dogs of war,
The voice of one who went before,
But most of all the mirror’s gaze,
Which counts us out our numbered days.”
― Clive Barker

‘Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
Contagion to this world. – William Shakespeare

“The shortest horror story:

The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door.”
― Frederic Brown

“Horror is the removal of masks.”
― Robert Bloch

“If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.”
“Always keep your foes confused. If they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. Sometimes the best way to baffle them is to make moves that have no purpose, or even seem to work against you.”
“There’s no shame in fear, my father told me. What matters is how we face it.”
“… when you know what a man wants you know who he is, and how to move him.”
“I prefer my history dead. Dead history is writ in ink, the living sort in blood.”

British Author Quotes Taken Out of Context

March 3, 2016 by Meet Brenda 3 Comments

I had such fun writing my last post of quotes taken out of context that today, I’m doing it again! This time, I’m taking British author quotes out of context.

Scroll down to link your post to this week’s Lit Lovers!

Are all online quotes accurate? Turns out, not so much! Take a look at some of these British author quotes taken out of context.

British Author Quotes Taken Out of Context

Take a look at how the meaning of these British author quotes change when they are taken out of context.

George Orwell, 1984

Out of Context: “A lunatic was simply a minority.”

In Context: “Perhaps a lunatic was simply a minority of one.”

George Eliot, Middlemarch

Out of Context: “Men know best about everything.”

In Context: “And, of course men know best about everything, except what women know better.”

William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Out of Context:“Brevity is the soul of wit and tediousness.”

In Context: “Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit, And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes, I will be brief.”

Are all online quotes accurate? Turns out, not so much! Take a look at some of these British author quotes taken out of context.George Eliot, Middlemarch

British Author Quotes Out of Context: “Pride is not a bad thing.”

In Context: “We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, “Oh, nothing!” Pride helps; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our hurts— not to hurt others.”

Charles Dickens, Master Humphrey’s Clock

Out of Context: “Never close your lips to those whom you have already opened your heart.”

In Context: “To conceal anything from those to whom I am attached, is not in my nature. I can never close my lips where I have opened my heart.

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Out of Context: “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” (this one comes from the movie, but is often attributed as a book quote).

In Context: “He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. ‘It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,’ he used to say. ‘You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

A.A. Miline, Winnie the Pooh

British Author Quotes Out of Context: “I used to believe in forever, but forever’s too good to be true.”

In Context: There is no reference for this. Winnie the Pooh, as I uncovered last time, is one of the most wrongfully-quoted stories in the entire history of books (maybe other than religious texts). This line actually comes from Winnie The Pooh’s Most Grand Adventure. You can hear the miss-attributed line at 1:27.
