British Author Quotes Taken Out of Context

March 3, 2016 by Meet Brenda 3 Comments

I had such fun writing my last post of quotes taken out of context that today, I’m doing it again! This time, I’m taking British author quotes out of context.

Scroll down to link your post to this week’s Lit Lovers!

Are all online quotes accurate? Turns out, not so much! Take a look at some of these British author quotes taken out of context.

British Author Quotes Taken Out of Context

Take a look at how the meaning of these British author quotes change when they are taken out of context.

George Orwell, 1984

Out of Context: “A lunatic was simply a minority.”

In Context: “Perhaps a lunatic was simply a minority of one.”

George Eliot, Middlemarch

Out of Context: “Men know best about everything.”

In Context: “And, of course men know best about everything, except what women know better.”

William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Out of Context:“Brevity is the soul of wit and tediousness.”

In Context: “Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit, And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes, I will be brief.”

Are all online quotes accurate? Turns out, not so much! Take a look at some of these British author quotes taken out of context.George Eliot, Middlemarch

British Author Quotes Out of Context: “Pride is not a bad thing.”

In Context: “We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, “Oh, nothing!” Pride helps; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our hurts— not to hurt others.”

Charles Dickens, Master Humphrey’s Clock

Out of Context: “Never close your lips to those whom you have already opened your heart.”

In Context: “To conceal anything from those to whom I am attached, is not in my nature. I can never close my lips where I have opened my heart.

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Out of Context: “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” (this one comes from the movie, but is often attributed as a book quote).

In Context: “He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. ‘It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,’ he used to say. ‘You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

A.A. Miline, Winnie the Pooh

British Author Quotes Out of Context: “I used to believe in forever, but forever’s too good to be true.”

In Context: There is no reference for this. Winnie the Pooh, as I uncovered last time, is one of the most wrongfully-quoted stories in the entire history of books (maybe other than religious texts). This line actually comes from Winnie The Pooh’s Most Grand Adventure. You can hear the miss-attributed line at 1:27.

Spooky Poems to Read on Halloween: Lit Lovers Link Party

October 28, 2015 by Meet Brenda 4 Comments

I have never been much of a person who enjoys a lot of poetry. I read quickly, which makes it difficult for me to appreciate the rhythm of poetry. I feel terribly uncultured for not appreciating poetry, so one of my goals for reading more diverse things is to add poetry to the list. Reading aloud reminds me of Halloween and the spooky season, so what better place to start reading poetry than on Halloween?

I’ve pulled my favorite lines from the following spooky poems to read on Halloween. I liked the imagery and allusion to terror in my selections. I like that the passages are definitely spooky, but do not smack you in the face with horrible images. The illusion to fear, I believe, is more terrifying than seeing what you are scared of first hand.

Looking for something creepy to read on Halloween? These 7 spooky poems to read on Halloween will make any party scarier.

7 Spooky Poems to Read on Halloween

You can read all of the selections listed below this Halloween, or you can find the full poems online, free of charge. I chose mainly women poets for this line up, because women often get overlooked in the horror genre, but many of them write/wrote amazingly creepy things!

The Haunted Chamber by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“Each heart has its haunted chamber, where the silent moonlight falls! On the floor are mysterious footsteps, there are whispers along the walls!”

Looking for something creepy to read on Halloween? These 7 spooky poems to read on Halloween will make any party scarier. The Snow-Fiend by Ann Radcliffe

“Disease and want and shuddering fear, danger and woe and death are there. ”

Will-O’-the-wisp by Madison Cawein

“Now o’er the sluggish stream he wends,
A slim light at his finger-ends;
The spotted spawn, the toad hath clomb,
Slips oozily, slips oozily;
His easy footsteps seem to come–
Like bubble-gaspings of the scum–
Now near to me, now near to me.”

Spirits of the Dead” by Edgar Allan Poe

“But their red orbs, without beam,

To thy weariness shall seem

As a burning and a fever

Which would cling to thee for ever.”

Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti

“Swift fire spread through her veins, knock’d at her heart,

Met the fire smoldering there

And overbore its lesser flame;

She gorged on bitterness without a name.”

Looking for something creepy to read on Halloween? These 7 spooky poems to read on Halloween will make any party scarier.

The Witch by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge

“Her voice was the voice that women have,
Who plead for their heart’s desire.
She came—she came—and the quivering flame
Sunk and died in the fire.”

All Souls by Edith Wharton

“Fear not that sound like wind in the trees:
It is only their call that comes on the breeze;
Fear not the shudder that seems to pass:
It is only the tread of their feet on the grass;
Fear not the drip of the bough as you stoop:
It is only the touch of their hands that grope —
For the year’s on the turn, and it’s All Souls’ night,
When the dead can yearn and the dead can smite.”

Famous Quotes from Frankenstein: Lit Lovers Link Party

August 13, 2015 by Meet Brenda 6 Comments

Frankenstein is one of the classic horror stories that has survived the ages. Readers love a tale of a crazy mad scientist and experiments gone wrong. A new movie adaptation of the classic tale will be released in November (which is kind of an odd time for a horror movie. Why not October?) and will focus more on the tale of the doctor than his monster, which should be interesting.

Frankenstein is also one of the few horror tales written by a woman that is still celebrated today. Mary Shelley’s creative ingenuity inspired thousands of other horror stories and is one of the most famous monster mad-scientists stories to date. That is a pretty impressive resume for a writer.

In honor of Mary Shelley and the new movie coming out, today’s Lit Lovers features famous quotes from Frankenstein.

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

12 Famous Quotes from Frankenstein that Summarize the Story in Less than 300 Words

What I like about old stories like this is how formal the writing is. Shelley uses a lot of “thees” and “thous” and her phrasing is magical. I appreciate how writing was more of an expressive art form back then than it is now.

If you don’t have time to read the whole novel, these famous quotes from Frankenstein summarize the main points.

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

“The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine.”

“I feel my heart glow with an enthusiasm which elevates me to heaven, for nothing contributes so much to tranquillize the mind as a steady purpose — a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.”

A mind of moderate capacity which closely pursues one study must infallibly arrive at great proficiency in that study.”

“Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”

“We are fashioned creatures, but half made up.”

“Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded.”

“How mutable are our feelings, and how strange is that clinging love we have of life even in the excess of misery!”

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

“Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it.”

“‘Oh! Be men, or be more than men. Be steady to your purposes and firm as a rock. This ice is not made of such stuff as your hearts may be; it is mutable and cannot withstand you if you say that it shall not. Do not return to your families with the stigma of disgrace marked on your brows. Return as heroes who have fought and conquered and who know not what it is to turn their backs on the foe.'”

“I trembled, and my heart failed within me; when, on looking up, I saw, by the light of the moon, the daemon at the casement.”

“I looked upon the sea; it was to be my grave.”

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

Beautiful Peter Pan Quotes from the Original Story (Lit Lovers Link Party)

July 22, 2015 by Meet Brenda 9 Comments

Looking forward to the new Pan movie? Rediscover the magic of the original with these beautiful Peter Pan quotes from the original story.

If you’re here for the Lit Lovers link Party, scroll to the bottom of the post to add your links!

I watched the new trailer for the “Pan” movie recently, which is supposedly the story of how Peter Pan became the famous, ageless boy. I have a few issues with this new movie (although it might be enjoyable to watch). First, Peter Pan looks like a mild person. Peter Pan was always meant to be extremely arrogant. Second, the movie tosses all cannon aside. Everyone knows Peter found Neverland because he fell out of his stroller one day. Third, and the thing that bugged me the most about the trailer is how many adults were in it. Adults do not belong in a Peter Pan story  as main characters. Neverland is for children.

The trailer made me want to read the original story once again, and as a result, I’ve put together my favorite Peter Pan quotes from the one true story. I’ve always loved Peter Pan (except this time around I noticed how sexist the story really is), but I’ve never been much of a fan of series that “adult” the story.

“Almost the only thing for certain is that there are fairies wherever there are children.”

“Two is the beginning of the end.”

“There never was a simpler, happier family until the coming of Peter Pan.”

“We too have been there; we can still hear the sound of the surf, though we shall land no more.”

“I want always to be a little boy and to have fun.”

“When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies.”

“To die will be an awfully big adventure.”

Looking forward to the new Pan movie? Rediscover the magic of the original with these beautiful Peter Pan quotes from the original story.

“There is nothing more pleasant of an evening for you and me when the day’s toil is over than to rest by the fire with the little ones near by.”

“If you knew how great is a mother’s love, you would have no fear.”

“He darted across a space on which the moonlight played, one finger on his lip and his dagger at the ready. He was frightfully happy.”

“I’m youth, I’m joy; I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg.”

“She was one of the kind that likes to grow up. In the end she grew up of her own free will a day quicker than other girls.”

The 50 Best Oscar Wilde Quotes

January 14, 2015 by Meet Brenda 16 Comments

If you love Oscar Wilde, then you won't want to miss this collection of the best Oscar Wilde quotes! You may have never realized these quotes were his!

Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite authors of all time. Aside from the whole gay thing, he reminds me a lot of my husband. He was an amazing writer, and always had some amazingly witty quote for any occasion. Quotes by Oscar Wilde are still some of the funniest short statements on society and people in general that I have ever read.

Oscar was innovative and quite controversial in his day. He was definitely born in the wrong time as it seemed like he hated all of the silly social rules that were present in the Victorian period. Whenever I want to have a good chuckle about society, I always turn to Oscar.

Today, I thought I would put together a list of the best Oscar Wilde quotes.

Scroll to the bottom of the post to add your bookish posts to the link up!

Oscar Wilde Quotes about Reading

oscar wilde quotes about books

“The good end happily, the bad unhappily – that is what fiction means.”

“There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written.”

“In old days books were written by men of letters and read by the public. Nowadays books are written by the public and read by nobody.”

“It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.”

“If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.”

“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.”

“A poet can survive everything but a misprint.”

“With freedom, books, flowers, and the moon, who could not be happy?”

“The difference between literature and journalism is that journalism is unreadable and literature is not read.”

“Its failings notwithstanding, there is much to be said in favor of journalism in that by giving us the opinion of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.”

Oscar Wilde Quotes about Love

oscar wilde quotes on love

“One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry.”

“When a man has once loved a woman he will do anything for her except continue to love her.”

“When men love women, they give them but a little of their lives. But women when they love give everything.”

“Never love anyone who treats you like you’re ordinary.”

“You don’t love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.”

“The very essence of romance is uncertainty.”

“Between men and women there is no friendship possible. There is passion, enmity, worship, love, but no friendship.”

“Deceiving others; that is what the world calls a romance.”

“Who, being loved, is poor?”

“I think to elope is cowardly. It’s running away from danger.”

Oscar Wilde Quotes about Fashion

oscar wilde on fashion

“A really well made buttonhole is the only link between art and nature.”

“One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.”

“If one is to behave badly, it is better to be bad in a becoming dress.”

“The beauty of a dress depends entirely and absolutely on the loveliness it shields.”

“A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life.”

“Fashion is ephemeral. Art is eternal.”

“And, after all, what is a fashion? From the artistic point of view, it is usually a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”

“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”

“The future belongs to the dandy. It is the exquisites who are going to rule.”

“Looking good and dressing well is a necessity. Having a purpose in life is not.”

Oscar Wilde Quotes about Life

oscar wilde quotes about thinking

“A man who does not think for himself does not think at all.”

“Our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us; and true progress is to know more, and be more, and to do more.”

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

“I never put off till tomorrow what I can possibly do – the day after.”

“Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.”

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

“The only thing to do with good advice is pass it on. It is never any use to oneself.”

“When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life; now that I am old I know that it is.”

“One should never take sides in anything. Taking sides is the beginning of sincerity, and earnestness follows shortly afterwards, and the human being becomes a bore.”

“Nothing is so aggravating as calmness.”

Oscar Wilde Quotes about Society

oscar wilde society quotes

“Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals.”

“It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.”

“A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone’s feelings unintentionally.”

“It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about, nowadays, saying things against one behind one’s back that are absolutely and entirely true.”

“The public has always, and in every age, been badly brought up.”

“One can survive everything nowadays, except death, and live down anything except a good reputation.”

“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”

“Arguments are extremely vulgar, for everybody in good society holds exactly the same opinions.”

“Never speak disrespectfully of Society. Only people who can’t get into it do that.”

“Society, civilized society at least, is never very ready to believe anything to the detriment of those who are both rich and fascinating. It feels instinctively that manners are of more importance than morals, and, in its opinion, the highest respectability is of much less value than the possession of a good chef.”
