The Most Anticipated Books of 2016: January-June

January 6, 2016 by Meet Brenda 6 Comments

Take a look at the most anticipated books of 2016 that I’ll be reading in this round-up of books published from January-June.

2016 is here, and it looks like it is not only shaping up to be a year filled with delightfully bookish movies, but it will also be a year full of thrilling books that will be remembered for years to come.

These are the most anticipated books of 2016 that I’m planning to read in the first half of the year:

January

Mr. Splitfoot, Samantha Hunt
This is probably one of my favorite picks for the most anticipated books of 2016. It’s a ghost story, with orphans, who go on a journey, and has a dream-like writing style like the Night Circus.

February

Square Wave, Mark de Silva

Square Wave looks like a mix between a science fiction novel and a historical war novel. It tells the tale of a night guard who finds out how to weaponize weather.

March

The Nest, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

The Nest supposedly was purchased for over a million dollars, which is insane. I’m not sure if I will like this book, because I usually don’t like books about dysfunctional families, but with a price tag of over $1 million dollars, it better be amazing and I want to read it.

April

Ladivine: A Novel, Marie NDiaye

This book is written by a French woman, which means it is probably beautifully written. The story is centered around murder, which means it will probably be quite entertaining.

May

Zero K, Don DeLillo

Zero K is a story of a billionaire who doesn’t want to die and tries not to. It sounds like the story Batman should have been. I’m excited.

June

So Much for That Winter, Dorthe Nors

Dorthe is Danish, which means by reading this book I”ll be accomplishing my goal of reading more diverse books. This book is a collection of two modern twisted romance stories, which sounds delightful.

My Favorite Reads of 2015: Literary Junkies

December 29, 2015 by Meet Brenda 4 Comments

I can hardly believe December is over! This year has flown by for me. Today, as part of the Literary Junkies link party, I’m sharing my favorite reads of 2015 and some other book chat with you.

If you are curious, the Lit Lovers link party starts back up again January 7th and I am looking forward to see what you have been up to since I’ve been on vacation!

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!

This Month’s Questions: Favorite Reads of 2015

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

Right now, I’m reading The Raven Boys, recommended to me by a cousin. She said it was one of her favorite series, and so far, it’s shaping up to be a pretty interesting story! It mixes a bit of Arthurian legends with new age magic, all combined together in a way that feels magic without being silly. I like it when books are able to do this, so I’ll probably end up finishing the series if I like where it goes in this book.

2. What were your favorite reads of 2015?

I read a lot of things in 2015, mostly in binge batches. This year, I would go through periods where I read nothing at all, then I would read about four books at once. I can’t remember everything I read (I was pretty bad about reviewing my favorite reads of 2015), but right now, four books that I really enjoyed spring to mind.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!

Carry On

Carry On is the book written by Rainbow Rowell to go along with Fangirl, and it is basically Harry Potter fanfiction come to life. It is everything I ever wanted from my fanfiction and was extremely nostalgic to read.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post! The Martian

The Martian made me feel smarter when I read it, but at the same time, made me laugh. I don’t know that I’ve ever run across that in a book before.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!Ashfall

I actually just got Ashfall for Christmas and finished it a couple of days ago. Ashfall is based on the possibility of the large volcano in Yellowstone National park exploding and pushing the entire world (more or less) into years-long winter.

2015 was a great year for books! Find out some of the best and most favorite reads of 2015 in this Literary Junkies post!Me Before You

Me Before You explores the question of whether it is possible to fall in love with someone completely based on their brain and what happens to romantic feelings when one of the partners is completely disabled. I don’t know if I was extremely happy where the plot ended up, but it made me think long after the book ended, which is always the sign of a good book in my opinion!
3. What was your book-read total for 2015? Did you make your goal for the year?

I don’t like setting up goals for number of books. I think it is better to read at your own pace than feel like a failure for not reaching a reading goal. I don’t know how many books I read this year, but it was far fewer than many other years.
4. How many books would you like to read in 2016?

As many as I want to/can.
5. What is the number one book sitting on your Must Read list right now?

Well, my book swap partner, Jennifer of Busy Being Jennifer got me the last book in the Tiffany Aching series, so I need to start over again and complete it from book one this year. Jennifer also made me a beautiful hand-stitched embroidered wall hanging with a book theme, which was totally amazing.

Banned Books I will Never Read

September 30, 2015 by Meet Brenda 8 Comments

I appreciate the idea behind Banned Books Week. During Banned Books Week, books that have been banned or censored for various reasons (usually because they push social norms) are celebrated. I own the banned books mug, which is covered in titles of books that have been banned for various reason.

However, despite the fact that I believe everyone has the right to read what they want, there are some famous banned books that I will probably never read. Today, I’m sharing that list with you and telling you why these books will probably never end up on my TBR pile.

If you’re here for the Lit Lovers link party, add your link at the bottom of the post!

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week!

Lolita

I don’t like the idea of a much-older man taking advantage of a young girl, even if she was “asking for it.” I don’t approve of children dating adults and I definitely don’t approve of pedophilia, even if the book was not meant to promote unhealthy relationships with children (which it sounds like it does, the main character is obsessed with girls just entering puberty. Ick.). Whatever the reason for writing the book, you will never find Lolita on my shelf.

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week!

Their Eyes Were Watching God

Their Eyes Were Watching God book is full of depressing things from start to finish. Many books that are banned from schools have depressing themes. I realize the importance of exploring themes that may make us uncomfortable and question how the world works, but I do not feel a need to read every one of them. I’ve read plenty of depressing books in my day, and do not need to read any more.

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week!Tropic of Cancer

Tropic of Canceris a fake diary that was turned into a novel somehow. It is more a collection of musings, memories, and philosophical thoughts than a real story. Books like this frustrate me, because I like books to go somewhere- either with plot or with character development. I will probably never read Tropic of Cancer for this reason.

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week!Ulysses

Ulysses, I believe, is complete nonsense. I think this book is the result of an author who believes so firmly that she (in this case he) is so talented, that they can spit on a page and have people eat it up and comment on how talented and groundbreaking the book is. If I want to read random nonsense ramblings, I’ll just go read my old high school diaries.

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week! The Grapes of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath is a story about how depressing it was to live through the depression. I can understand that without reading every page in the story. I prefer books with at least some happy factor.

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week!Slaughterhouse Five

I’m not going to lie; I don’t really like war-themed books even in the best of cases. But Slaughterhouse-Five is particularly brutal, depressing, and violent. I don’t feel a need to read the book to understand that war is terrible.

Some banned books should be read, and some might be better left on the shelf. These 7 banned books I will never read. Read the list for Banned Books Week!Doctor Zhivago

I should like Doctor Zhivago because it’s a classic tale of epic events and romance. But have you ever tried to read a classic Russian novel? They could have benefited from some serious editing. I find it hard enough to keep up with which character is talking, much less with the plot. I do believe I own this book, but I’ve never been able to read more than about 10 pages before getting extremely bored.

What banned books will you never read? Which banned books are your favorites?

Books You Can Read in One Sitting (Lit Lovers Link Party)

August 19, 2015 by Meet Brenda 10 Comments

These days, I like to find books to read based on how much time I have to allot to reading. I usually don’t have time to spend weeks on a single book, so I’ve turned to shorter books in recent months.

Previous editions of this series have included lists of books you can read in one hour and books you can read in two hours. Today, I’m sharing a list of books you can read in one sitting.

As with all of the other posts, this list assumes you can read about 50-70 pages in an hour. One sitting could be anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read.

14+ Books You can Read in One Sitting

To qualify for this list, all of the books not only have around 300 pages, but they also have engaging plots. I find I am much more likely to read a book in a single day if the plot is engaging. Most “beach reads” fit into this category of books. I’ve included some of my favorites below:

The Graveyard Book

The Graveyard Book is a fun book written by Neil Gaiman based on a short story he wrote earlier in life. It tells the tale of a living boy raised by ghosts in a graveyard. It’s fast-paced and fun.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read.
Attachments

I love all Rainbow Rowell books, but Attachments was one of the easiest and fastest to read. I loved the exchange of notes between the co-workers and the man who was reading them. It was cute!

What Alice Forgot

What Alice Forgot is my favorite “amnesia” story. This story tells the tale of a woman who wakes up 40 but her last memory is of being 29. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending, but I really enjoyed the journey and the story’s pace.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is a mystery and it’s about a book lover, so it is easy to read quickly if you are also a book lover/mystery lover. The plot reminded me slightly of Inkheart, which is one of my favorite stories.

If I Stay

If I Stay is a book that makes you want to cry on every page, but it is really fast-paced and draws you in. I still have yet to see the movie, though. I think in film it would be too sad.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

There is so much funny in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy it is a must-read for everyone even if you don’t typically enjoy science fiction novels. It is both short and fast-paced, which makes it easy to consume in one sitting.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read. The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is definitely my favorite dystopian YA novel. The story is interesting, it has just enough romance to be present but not annoying, and the plot progression makes sense.

Stardust

Stardust is another Neil Gaiman favorite of mine. I love the slightly sarcastic twist on old-style fairy tales.

Go Set a Watchman

I thought Go Set a Watchman would be difficult to read, but I breezed through it. Although it doesn’t have quite the same social idealism that the first book has, I thought it had a more realistic view on race relations for the time (1950s, I believe), as hideous as we know that view to be now.

The Invisible Man

If you want a classic book that has a compelling plot, The Invisible Man is one of my favorites.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read.Around the World in 80 Days

Around the World in 80 Days was one of my favorite stories as a child. I loved the travel stories and the question of whether he would make it around the world in time. I was quite invested in his journey the first time I read it.

Looking for books to bing read? These are books you can read in one sitting whether you have a few hours or a whole day to read. The Great Gatsby

I don’t know if a reading of The Great Gatsby should be rushed, but it technically does qualify for the list of books you can read in one sitting as it is pretty short.

The First Four Harry Potter Books

Harry Potter books are typically fast reads until they start getting really long. It is definitely possible to read them in a single sitting. I read just about all of them in a single sitting until book 6.

Nearly All Middle Grade Books

I put this in here because I enjoy middle grade books (you can find some of my favorites on this list). Sometimes a middle grade book is the perfect thing to read to get out of a reading slump or to have something to read that isn’t all about romance or depressing events.

Literary Junkies: Fall Books on my List

July 27, 2015 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

What should you read this fall? These fall books on my list are perfect for readers of all ages and encompass a range of genres.

It’s time for another Literary Junkies link party. If you want to join a fun virtual book club, the Literary Junkies club is home to some of my favorite people (including myself, naturally). We are reading The Magician’s Lie by Greer MacAllister in August, which looks like it will be an interesting read!
1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

Right now, I’m waiting on my copy of Go Set a Watchman to arrive. It was supposed to be here 10 days ago, but there was a shipping problem… So, I’m just waiting on that one.
2. What book reminds you of summertime as a kid?

I tend to turn to science fiction and action books in the summer. Probably because of all of the summer blockbusters. So, books that reminds me of summertime all tend to have science fiction themes. I really enjoyed the Artemis Fowl books when I was younger, and when I was even younger than that, I really liked the Boxcar Children mysteries.
3. What book did you have on your summer reading list that truly nailed it as a summer reading favorite?

None of the books I have read so far this summer have really wowed me. So that’s been kind of a bust. I really need to visit a bookstore/library and try again. I’ve been pretty busy doing activities this summer, so I haven’t read as many books as usual.
4. Who is your favorite author and why? Give us your top recommendation by them.

Terry Pratchett is probably my favorite author right now. I always enjoy reading his books. They make me smile. I’m still pretty sad he is dead. Read any Discworld book (the ones staring women are my favorites) and you will be happy.
5. Fall Book Reading lists are starting to make their appearances. What are you excited to read that’s being released this fall?

There are a few fall books on my list that I’m looking forward to when the weather cools. I usually like to read creepier books in the fall. In September, the final Discworld/Tiffany Aching story will be released. I will definitely be reading that one. Another Throne of Glass book is also coming out- I might try that series. In October, a sort of fantasy/horror book comes out based on the podcast Welcome to Night Vale, which looks pretty creepy and fun.
