Book List: 6 Books Your Toddler Will Love

October 12, 2010 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

Finding books for toddlers is easier than finding books for babies. Most young children love stories and can sit and understand short stories. Many toddlers still don’t want to sit for more than five minutes or so, so books with few words are still best!

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. This is the ultimate book for toddlers. There is not a single toddler that I know of that did not absolutely love this book. The storyline about the small bunny resisting bedtime is attractive to toddlers. The illustrations are also surprisingly rich. My little girl loved looking for the tiny mouse on each page.

Sheep in the Jeep by Nancy Shaw. This book is literally about sheep in a jeep. I remember when I was a very young child I loved this book. All the rhymes and silly stories are fun for toddlers. The book is on the short side too, which is perfect.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. This simple story follows a mom bear and her child as they go through the zoo. They ask different animals what they can see from their position in the zoo. The pictures look something like crumpled paper glued to the page, which is rather unusual. My little girl loved this book as a toddler and asked for it again and again.

Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes by anyone. Nursery rhymes are ideal for toddlers learning how to form words for the first time. The simple rhymes and song-like qualities of the rhymes appeal to toddlers. If you choose a version with bright pictures the toddler will love it even more.

Maisy books by Lucy Cousins. There are several Maisy books that all feature a small white mouse. The illustrations look to me as if they were made in Windows paint, but for some reason my daughter loved these stories as a child. Many of the stories feature interactive pages, such as pop-ups and flaps, so maybe that is what my daughter found attractive about the stories.

Curious George by H.A. Rey. Curious George is a very familiar character for most families. The curious monkey is always getting into trouble of some sort. Toddlers will love the cute illustrations in the story, and as they grow older, the story lines will amuse them as well. Curious George is a great book that can grow with your child from a toddler all the way to second grade when he can read the stories all on his own.

Book List: 7 Books Every Baby Should Own

October 5, 2010 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

I thought I’d do something a little different over the next few weeks. With Christmas coming up, I thought I’d start to list some of my favorite books by age category in case you feel like buying a book for a loved one this season. 🙂

Today I start with babies. Babies are sometimes hard to find good books for, because what really holds a baby’s attention? I’ll list some of my favorites, but if you have a different opinion, certainly list them!

<SCRIPT charset=”utf-8″ type=”text/javascript” src=”https://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?rt=tf_cw&ServiceVersion=20070822&MarketPlace=US&ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fdaimay-20%2F8010%2Fdfb13769-f8ab-49a9-b234-20ef94a50fcb&Operation=GetScriptTemplate”> </SCRIPT> <NOSCRIPT><A HREF=”https://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?rt=tf_cw&ServiceVersion=20070822&MarketPlace=US&ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fdaimay-20%2F8010%2Fdfb13769-f8ab-49a9-b234-20ef94a50fcb&Operation=NoScript”>Amazon.com Widgets</A></NOSCRIPT>

Pat the Bunny by Edith Kunhardt Davis: This is my all time favorite book for babies. It has to be one of the oldest books still in print, but there’s a reason for that. This book is full of sensory activity and simple words that babies love. Who doesn’t want to smell the soapy flours with Paul and Judy or touch daddy’ scratchy face? Classic.

Toes, Ears and Nose by Marion Dane Bauer: This is your basic lift-the-flap book, but for some reason my little girl loved this book more than most. She loved lifting the flaps and identifying the body parts of the babies. The only qualm I have with this book is that the flaps are rather fragile and can tear easily.

Perfect Pets by Roger Priddy (no relation): Honestly, I like most of the books for babies by Priddy Books. But this one was a baby favorite. In this tiny book, small enough for babies to hold on their own, there is a series of pets to touch. There is a fluffy dog, a scaly fish, a cat, and a rabbit. There are also some cute words but my baby much preferred to touch the animals rather than hear the words.

The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown: Somehow this lady knew what babies and young kids want to hear. The Runaway Bunny is about a little bunny who talks about running away from his mother but the mother always says she will run after him. Babies will not really understand the plot, but most of them will enjoy looking at pictures. This is a book the baby can enjoy for several years as she ages.

The Little Rabbit by Judy Dunn: This is a book based on real photographs used as the pictures. It chronicles the story of a little girl who gets an easter rabbit and how it grows. The story is really too complicated even for toddlers, but my baby girl loved the real photograph pictures. This is another story that can grow with your baby.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen: This story is longer than most books for babies but the repetition is ideal. In this story a dad and several small children decide to go hunt for bears. Why? I don’t know. But anyway, they travel through different terrain types just like the old rhyme. Eventually they find a bear and must hurry back home before the bear eats them. For some reason this terror at the end appeals to babies and toddlers.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown: Babies won’t really get this story, but I love it so much, I start reading it to them early. Look how the colors fade on each page as it gets darker. Pretty cool.

Any favorites of you or your babies that should be on this list?
