How to Throw an Epic Game of Thrones Party

June 3, 2014 by Meet Brenda 18 Comments

Need some inspiration for your next Game of Thrones party? These food, decoration, and drink ideas will have you feeling like you fell into Westeros.

Season 4 of the Game of Thrones is wrapping up this month, but rather than cry about it, like I want to do, there is still time to celebrate this amazing series. How can you keep the love of Westeros alive without the show? By throwing an epic Game of Thrones party, of course!

Remember, the Game of Thrones is not appropriate for children in any way, so please do not use this theme for a child’s birthday party.

Seriously. Don’t.

Decorations for a Game of Thrones Party

When it comes to party decorations, you don’t have to spend a whole lot of time or effort. The key is to create a feeling for the universe, which really doesn’t take much. But if you want to get a little more involved, here are some simple tips:

  • Use the house banners and mottos as a base for your decorations.
  • Artist Thomas Gateley from Liquid Soul Design has a whole series of graphics he created to celebrate the series. I particularly love his house posters.
  • Since Game of Thrones is medieval, use things like wine glasses, grapes in a bowl, and your GoT books or DVDs as a basis for your decorations.
  • Use rich jewel tones and plenty of cloth, where possible, to create the right mood.
  • Candlelight is essential.
  • Get creative! To make my post header, I used some of my daughter’s toys and the Game of Thrones books.

Here are a few of my favorite Game of Thrones Party decorations from around the web:

How amazing is this tiny Iron Throne crafted from popsicle sticks and plastic swords? This genius decoration idea was created by VixVenture designs. If you want to make your own iron throne cake topper, just follow these directions.

You can always print a world map from online (the The Lands of Ice and Fire are the official Westeros maps) and use it as the basis for your decorations. The maps can be transformed into wall decorations, placemats, or centerpieces.

A weirwood tree would also make an amazing centerpiece. I couldn’t find any tutorial for the tree that wasn’t a cake, but this basic tree tutorial from Storm the Castle can help you get started, and from there you can paint it white.

Game of Thrones Party Food

Medieval food is pretty basic- just think bread, meat, and fruit. If you want more specific food guidelines for The Game of Thrones, just read one of these passages from A Clash of Kings (incidentally, I heard that good old George Martin added a lot of  extra food passages just because someone told him they were making the dishes from the books. I can’t decide if that is cool or not).

Cersei set a tasty table, that could not be denied. They started with a creamy chestnut soup, crusty hot bread, and greens dressed with apples and pine nuts. Then came lamprey pie, honeyed ham, buttered carrots, white beans and bacon, and roast swan stuffed with mushrooms and oysters. Tyrion was exceedingly courteous; he offered his sister the choice portions of every dish, and made certain he ate only what she did. Not that he truly throught she’d poison him, but it never hurt to be careful.

-A Clash of Kings (Game of Thrones), George R. R. Martin

Bryton Taylor at Food in Literature created a recipe for chestnut soup inspired by A Clash of Kings, and it looks amazing. She makes recipes from all sorts of books, and so, of course, I love her.

Tori Avey from Tori’s Kitchen has created a delicious honey herb roasted chicken that would make the perfect main dish for any Game of Thrones party.

For dessert, how about serving some dragon egg cookies like these from Semi Sweet Designs? I love how realistic these cookies are, but they aren’t that complicated to make.

If you have even less baking skills than that, just attach these cupcake toppers from Inn at the Crossroads to a toothpick and poke into some cupcakes. If you want to get extra-fancy, you could try dying the icing a different color on each cake to match the house color.

For drinks, you can serve these 10 cocktails inspired by the women of Game of Thrones or try creating something a little more involved, like creating “Milk of the Poppy” drinks. Mulled wine is also a classic choice for a medieval-themed party.

If you’re wondering how to make Milk of the Poppy drinks, watch this video from Feast of Fiction which tells you how to make lemon cakes and milk of the poppy from Game of Thrones.

This mulled wine from Wishful Chef is the perfect warm drink to serve at any Game of Thrones party and will complete the medieval feel.

Game of Thrones Party Games and Activities

Need some inspiration for your next Game of Thrones party? These food, decoration, and drink ideas will have you feeling like you fell into Westeros.

I don’t much care for silly games at parties, and at a Game of Thrones party, you should probably watch at least one episode of the show, but if you need more activity than that, you must purchase the Game of Thrones board game. My friends, family, and I have had hours of fun playing this game and it is always fun. It is best when four or more people play.

If you’re not quite so nerdy, you might like these GoT playing cards, which simply feature GoT characters and allow you to play any regular card game.

Save yourself time and effort and purchase these pre-made GoT party supplies:

I loved the mermaid party! It’s too bad my little girl has a January birthday. Mermaids just seem to fit better in the summer.

Okay I’m totally geeking out now. I have been such a huge fan of the Fire and Ice trilogy. I have just enough friends who love GoT that we could so pull this off.

I haven’t watched the show, but I guess I should. I seem to binge watch tv shows in the summer, so that might happen. The food inspired by the series sounds really good. I’m down for a Game of Thrones party!

If we didn’t have so many children running around here, it would have happened like 5 times already at my house. 🙂

Another Game of Thrones party game you can play is the app Names In A Hat (https://www.namesinahat.org) using the GoT characters list. Someone describes the characters and you have to guess which one it is – great fun!

    Great ideas!

Another Game of Thrones party game you can play is Names In A Hat using the Game of Thrones name list on the app (https://www.namesinahat.org). You’re prompted with characters’ names and have to get your teammates to guess as many of them as possible before the time runs out.

[…] There are a lot of food references in A Song of Ice and Fire (not as much in the TV show, because too much time is taken up with violence and sex). The food always sounds so amazing. These dishes would be perfect to serve at your Game of Thrones party! […]
