A Song of Ice and Fire (and the companion show, The Game of Thrones) is an amazing universe. Never has there been a book universe so detailed since The Lord of the Rings. High fantasy lovers have raved about this series for years, but now that the show is so popular, it seems that everyone is Game of Thrones-crazy.
To me, The Game of Thrones is really all about the women. The men may think they are in control in the GoT world, but they are mistaken. I think the feminist aspects of the story is what makes it so successful and why the series is as popular as it is today.
The other day, I wrote a post about how to host a book-themed party for children, and it got me to thinking- why can’t adults have themed parties? The first thing I thought of was alcohol, naturally; and I came up with 10 Game of Thrones cocktails that suit the personality of the leading ladies of The Game of Thrones.
10 Game of Thrones Cocktails to Serve While You Watch
Sip on these Game of Thrones cocktails as you watch the new season of Game of Thrones.
Sansa: Blended White Russian

Sansa is seemingly meek and ladylike, and she wants to be feminine in a world where femininity is scorned. I appreciate that about her, but I think Sansa is stronger than she looks. I believe she will surprise us one day with her strength and character. This makes the hidden strength in a White Russian her prefect signature drink and one of the ultimate Game of Thrones cocktails.
Preparation:
- 1 1/2 ounces vodka
- 3/4 ounce cream
- 3/4 ounce coffee liqueur
Mix all ingredients together and pour over ice.
Daenerys: Tequila Sunset

Daenerys has been a strong character from day one of The Game of Thrones. From her adventures being sold into a loveless marriage to her adventures becoming the mother of dragons and taking over an entire continent, she deserves a strong, vibrant cocktail just like her. That is why her drink is the Tequila Sunset.
Preparation:
- 5 oz orange juice
- 1 oz tequila
- 1/2 oz blackberry brandy
- 1 cherry
Mix the tequila and orange juice in a glass. Add the blackberry brandy and stir slightly. Add ice (optional) and garnish with a cherry (or the heart of a small creature).
Aria: Virgin Mojito

Aria is as tough as nails, but she is still a young girl, after all. That is why her cocktail is a virgin. The crispness of the mint is reminiscent of the cold winter land where Aria is from, and the bitterness of the lime shows how she views the world, even at such a young age.
Preparation:
- 6 mint leaves
- 1 lime, juiced
- 1 can of ginger ale
Tear the mint leaves into tiny pieces. Mix the lime juice, leaves, and ginger ale in a cup. Add ice.
Cersei: White Whiskey

Cersei is a cold, hard woman. She hates that she is the most competent in the family (in her eyes) but is forced to take a lesser role simply because she is a woman. She is not above using her sexuality to win favors and power, however. A white whiskey spiked with orange bitters is the perfect drink to represent Cersei because it looks innocuous, but packs a powerful, burning punch.
Preparation:
- 2 ounces white whiskey
- 1 ounce ginger liqueur
- 1 ounce orange liqueur
- Pinch of orange bitters
Mix all ingredients together and serve room temperature. Or you can mix shake it with ice and serve cold.
Margaery: Jasper Rose

I love that the rose is the symbol of house Tyrell (which is really my favorite house, I believe). A rose, looks pretty and innocent, but get to close, and watch out! The Jasper Rose is the perfect cocktail for Margery thanks to hard alcohol, rose flavoring, and hidden bitters. I view the entire house of Tyrell as fitting this personality, especially their grandmother, Olenna.
Preparation:
- 1.5 oz gin
- .5 oz rose liqueur
- 1 oz lychee juice
- Pinch of bitters
Mix all ingredients together and shake or stir. Serve in a martini glass with a rose petal for garnish. This is one of my favorite Game of Thrones cocktails.
Melisandre: Bloody Mary

No cocktail is better for the queen of sacrifice than the Bloody Mary. Melisandre is a strange creature, and we don’t know that much about her- but we do know that she is completely dedicated to the Lord of Light. She really believes that she is doing what her religion dictates, which is sort of admirable, even if killing massive amounts of people isn’t. I hope we learn more about Melisandre in the future.
Preparation:
- 1 oz vodka
- 3 oz tomato juice
- 2 shakes hot sauce
- 1 shake Worcestershire sauce
- .5 oz lemon juice
- 1 sprinkle salt
- 1 sprinkle pepper
- 1 celery stalk
Mix all ingredients together except the celery. Pour into a glass with ice and add the celery stalk to the glass. Serve right away before the ingredients separate.
Brienne: Scotch

Poor Brienne is out of place in her world. She wants to be a career woman, but is scored wherever she goes. This doesn’t mean she has no feminine side, although she tries very hard to mask it. The perfect cocktail for Brienne is one she would choose herself. I think she would choose the manliest drink possible, just to make a point. Brienne would drink straight alcohol, I believe- no frills added. If you want to make the “Brienne” cocktail, serve a high-quality scotch or whiskey. Just take it slow, or you might end up on the floor. 🙂
Preparation:
Pour scotch in glass. Try not to drink it too fast.
Ygritte: Ice Frost

What better drink to celebrate the princess of frost than with a Frosty Cocktail? This sort of smoothie-meets-cocktail is perfect for toasting the princess north of the wall. Her hardened exterior is just like a shard of ice, but over time, I bet she would melt just like real ice.
Preparation:
- 1 oz vodka
- 1 oz cognac liqueur
- .5 oz orange-flavored liqueur
- 1 cup ice cubes
Crush the ice cubes into a blender (or use a margarita machine or a snow-cone maker if you have one) until shredded. Combine the other ingredients and shake to mix. Place the ice into a cup and pour the alcohol over the ice. Serve with a tiny blue or clear candy shard, if you want to get really fancy.
Ellaria: Ginger Orange Spice

Ellaria Sand is a sort of permanent mistress to prince Oberyn Martell and the mother of 4 of his daughters. Although, from her appearance in the show, you would not expect her to have even had one child- much less 4 (with the oldest being 14, no less). We haven’t seen much of Ellaria in the show, and from what I remember in the book, she isn’t that important (?correct me if I’m wrong), but she is one of our first glimpses into House Martell, which is pretty fun. Her personality is fun-loving and always up-for-adventure, and she certainly won’t put up with any prejudices simply because she is a bastard daughter and unmarried. A blood orange, ginger spice cocktail is her perfect signature drink.
Preparation:
- 2 ounces blood orange juice
- 1 wedge of lime, juiced
- 3 oz ginger ale
- 1.5 oz tequila
Mix the ingredients in a cocktail glass and serve over ice or chilled. Use a slice of blood orange as garnish for dramatic effect.
Yara/Asha: Vodka Martini

Yara hasn’t shown up in season 4 yet, but I really hope she shows up soon because she is another favorite character of mine. She is Theon’s sister, if you remember, and is currently fighting among the lords of the North to determine who shall become the new King of the North. I’m hoping it’s her. A Vodka martini isn’t a super-girly drink, and it reminds me of seawater, which is why it is the perfect cocktail for Yara/Asha of House Greyjoy.
Preparation:
- 1.5 oz vodka
- 1 oz dry vermouth
Shake or stir the ingredients together (Cocktail Snobs may sneer at me, but I’m not sure if there is a difference either way). Serve with olives, which will add to the fishy, sea-like taste.

If you want to come up with your own Game of Thrones cocktails, you might find the recipes in this book helpful. It’s even available in Kindle edition, which I think is super helpful. I almost never use any recipes I can’t locate on my phone these days.

Can I overstate how much I love this post? No. I cannot. 🙂 You win the internet today, Brenda. 🙂
Your picks for each character are also totally spot on.
(Though, most days my drink is a double Jameson neat – but I guess since I ‘taught’ myself to drink Irish whiskey because I was entering into a male dominated field, I’m a Brienne too in a way.)
Thanks for linking up with Spread the Love!
Lol, thanks! I had such fun trying to decide what everyone should drink. 🙂
A great menu of cocktails here! Thanks for sharing…
Love this! I would add that Shae is a flask of Jagermeister. You try to keep her hidden but when she comes out, she’s strong and spicy.
Good addition! I didn’t include all the characters because there are so many!
I think you hit all the really important ones, though! It was hard for me to think of anything to add, but it was just so fun I had to 🙂
These drinks sound amazing. Thanks for sharing it on Link’n blogs link up. Have a super week.
I love that this post is dedicated to the women of GoT.
*Two snaps*
I made 10 Game of Thrones cocktails, they include the men. Or boys. Or creatures.
Whatever.
