Book Vs Movie: A Storm of Swords vs Game of Thrones Season 3

August 6, 2013 by Meet Brenda 5 Comments

The thing that I hate the most about the Game of Thrones TV show, is that it is only 10 episodes long. I really think the series could be at least 13-15 episodes long and still have enough content to match the book. Anyway, season 3 ended way too soon for me, and here’s why:

Show:Game of Thrones Season 3

Buy it: Book on Amazon, Season 3 on Amazon

Plot:

The plot of season 3 is similar to the plot of the book. It always is. Most of the changes that they make are based around combining lesser characters, giving some roles to existing characters, and changing minor details so it works better on the screen. One of my favorite changes is how the crows in the show do not speak.

However! Season 3 only covers half of A Storm of Swords. In fact, most of the climax from the book is non-existent in the show. This left the entire season feeling unfinished and a waste of time (much like A Feast for Crows, actually). I bet they chopped this book in half because A Feast for Crows has such a small amount of plot.  I also wonder, if by breaking up the plot, they are hoping to give GM a little longer to finish the next book?

Characters:

Season 3 has all of the appropriate characters. Some of the minor characters were rolled into the more popular characters (notably the fool that was supposed to help Sansa escape). I really prefer the characters in the show, mostly because they are all a little less nasty.

Pacing:storm of swords book

The pacing for this season was terrible. Even though there were 10 episodes, 8 of them seemed like a waste of time. Since they neglected to put in half the book, it makes sense. I liked the pacing of the book much better. I understand why they broke up the book like they did, but it still felt like the entire season dragged and felt like a placeholder.

Overall Thoughts:

All in all, I spent the first half of this season waiting for it to begin. The last half covered the events in the first half of the book, but, of course, half of the book is left for season four. I am excited to see what will happen in season 4 now, and I am glad they didn’t cover all of the events in this season, or else season 4 would be extremely boring.

What did you think of A Game of Thrones Season 3?
