Book: The Last Summer (of You and Me)
Author: Ann Brashares
Year Published: 2008
Overall Rating: 3 stars
Target Audience: Teen girls/young women
Romance/Sex: The book is actually all about romance, but I think any sex is un-descriptive and rather clean.
Setting: Fire Island off of Long Island in New York.
Characters: Alice and Riley, two sisters, and their childhood friend, Paul
Plot: A few years after graduating from high school, Alice, Riley, and Paul visit the island where they were kids together. Alice and Paul discover new feelings for each other, but it turns out that is a small issue compared to the tragic secret they soon discover.
Thoughts: This book wasn’t as good as the Traveling Pants series. There was less drama and instrospective, which was one of the things that made the Traveling Pants series so interesting. The entire book felt kind of forced, as if Brashares was only writing it because she felt like she needed to, rather than writing it because it was a good story idea. I have trouble liking this kind of book because it seems to have little point or direction. Books that are too much like life are usually boring and sad. But overall, I think Ann Brashares is a good writer, and I liked the book well enough, even if I never really identified with the characters.
In other news, Wikipedia says this may be a movie soon, which I can’t get too excited about. I think it would make fora rather boring and depressing movie, actually, but we’ll see. Apparently, she can’t get out of the pants universe, and after Summer, wrote a 5th Sisterhood book. I’m a little sad about that, as the 4th book was supposed to end it, leaving the future unknown… Oh well. I guess you have to make money somehow…
