So, today I am going to do a slightly different review. This review is for a non-fiction curriculum that I am using with my daughter this year in school. This book, Phonics Pathways: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling (Jossey-Bass Teacher), reviews all of the phonics rules and rule breakers in the English language. The book is designed for K through third or fourth grade.
The book uses a series of word drills to help children learn to recognize each phonics rule and then learn to read them quickly. Each section focuses on a different rule that gets progressively harder. The first pages in the book focus on short vowel sounds, and the last pages focus on large compound words, such as “unsustainable.” Children are encouraged to stay on a page until they have mastered that phonics rule.
You can also use this book as a spelling book for older readers. Older children should be able to run through the first half of the book very quickly and spend more time on the later sections.
I really like this book because it covers all the basics of reading and phonics, but is still a very flexible program. I can still use this book with my daughter for three or four more years. Parents with children in multiple grades could use the book for several children at once. I give this book a four star rating. I would give it five, but there is no worksheet practice along with the book, which could be nice. The words are also random, and my daughter at least, prefers to read stories.
