Share something you’ve learned about book blogging or just blogging in general in the last month.
Although I’ve had Daily Mayo since 2009, I am just now starting to expand my readership beyond my own family. 🙂 I’ve been reading a lot about blogging recently, and I consider myself fairly new to the industry- even through I’ve been plugging away for quite some time!
The most inter sting thing that I’ve learned is that popular posts are not all about good writing!
Instead, your headline is a lot more important. Did you know that some sites (specifically Upworthy) spend much of their SEO energy researching the best headlines to use? Upworthy tests 25 different headlines for each of their articles to find the best combination that is the most shareable.
My take from this is that headlines are extremely important! Since I’ve read that, I’ve carefully considered all of my headlines and try to think of ways to make them sound more interesting and share-worthy. The key seems to be to follow several rules, including my favorite, the “mom” rule.
The mom rule is basically, if your headline is too controversial so that you would be ashamed to share it with your mother, then it will not get shared online nearly as much. Look for headlines that are slightly controversial rather than fully controversial and your articles will get shared a lot more!
Other rules include sharing what the article is about without giving the entire topic away, and choosing a noticeable or funny picture that make people want to share your content.
I find studies and research like this fascinating. I may have chosen the wrong career…
What about you? Have you learned anything interesting about blogging/writing/or anything lately?
