The Spiderwick Chronicles Books vs The Spiderwick Chronicles Movie Plot:
Book: Two twins and their big sister move into an old house in the country. They discover a field guide to magical creatures. The children don’t believe they are real until they discover a talking brownie in their house. They also discover a seeing stone to see the magical creatures and end up in a battle against goblins and other magical creatures.
Movie: The movie combines many of the plot elements from all five of the books. Some of the plot elements are skipped, and they add a little, such as Lucinda meeting her father, who should have been dead long ago.
Similarities: Many of the plot elements are the same, and the characters are very similar to that of the original books.
Differences: There are quite a few differences between the movie and book. The movie has a much faster pace and a more cohesive storyline. However, I enjoyed the plot in the book better. The movie added some elements, such as the Lucinda and father thing, and skipped some of the lesser battles between the kids and creatures.
Winner: I think the winner of this match is the book version of the story. The books are short enough for children around eight to read alone, and they also include fun illustrations. The movie is a little scary, and has a more evil feel than the books. The book creatures have more of a mischievous feel than an evil feel like they do in the movie.
