Book: The original Madeline book was released in 1940. The story is told all in rhyme and is about a girl living in a French boarding school with 11 other girls. She gets sick and has to get her appendix removed.
Movie: The movie made in 1998, is rather similar to the original story. Madeline goes through all of the major adventures in the original books, including having her appendix removed, getting lost at a circus and playing with the spoiled neighbor.
Similarities: There are many similarities between the two stories. All of the major plot points are there, and the characters are similar to those in the books.
Differences: The movie had to make the story more dramatic. In the movie, Madeline and the neighbor boy get kidnapped, which I don’t think happens in the books, but I could be wrong. They also have to fight against their home being taken away and other extra dramatic things.
Winner: If you like rhymes and simple stories, then the books are better. If you like a little more drama and sass, then the movie is better. I enjoy both formats, and so did my little girl.
