Ramona’s World is the last book in the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary. It was published in 1999. Since the first Ramona book was published around 1968, Ramona has had the longest childhood ever.
In this book she is about nine. She still has many of the tendencies that she had as a younger child, but she does not throw fits as much. She still has her quirky and inquisitive personality. The thing that I thought was the most interesting about this book is the time difference in publish dates. While there is not a lot of difference in the way the characters or things are described, the way that the parents behave is much more 1999 than 1968. In the first Ramona book, the mother leaves Ramona at home for a couple of hours alone. In Ramona’s World, she doesn’t even leave Ramona alone for a few minutes. I guess the social differences in parenting got to Cleary.
At any rate, this book, as all Ramona books, is fun and easy to read. Children between the ages of seven and ten should enjoy this story. I give Ramona’s World three stars.
