Avatar The Last Airbender Cartoon: Ang is a 12 year old airbender who was locked in ice for 100 years. He is the next avatar and while he was gone, the whole world went to pieces. He and his two friends travel around the world learning the bending skills necessary to bring balance back to the world.
The Last Airbender Movie: The movie only covers the first year of the children’s adventure when they learn water bending. The plotline follows that of the show fairly well, with a few changes necessary for the transition from cartoon to real life.
Similarities: The two stories follow all of the major plot points, including the main water battle and the ending.
Differences: The live movie has a much more serious tone than the show. Ang is a more serious character and many of the events from the show are glossed over or skipped. None of the events skipped are major plot points. The fire benders are also different in the movie and play a larger role. Zuko is also too old and his eye scar is barely noticeable.
Winner: I like the cartoon version better, but I don’t think the movie edition deserves all of the hatred it got. I thought the translation from cartoon to real life was about as well-aligned as it could have been. I don’t know if they are
