A Triple Knot Book Summary
Based on the real life of Joan of Kent, the cousin of King Edward III, A Triple Knot follows the adventures of Joan as she enters in a clandestine marriage to protect herself from her royal kin after the death of her father. Joan must navigate the tricky waters of medieval politics as she fights the king’s plan to marry her to another.
A Triple Knot breaths life and adventure into a true story I never knew existed. I love it when writers take the time and effort to investigate a historical figure closely enough to create an almost biographical-like novel surrounding their story. A Triple Knot will not disappoint any fans of medieval history!
Plot: Since the plot follow Joan’s real life path, it wasn’t quite action packed from start to finish, but it was quite engaging and interesting from page to page. I was rooting for Joan as she fought to maintain independence in a society that valued women only for their ability to bear sons.
Characters: I loved how Emma was able to bring the historical characters to life. not everyone was an honorable character, and everyone had flaws (even Joan), which made A Triple Knot quite realistic and enjoyable to read. I dislike when historical novels have characters that always behave (tweet this).
Setting: A Triple Knot is set in the 1300s, and Emma does an incredible job of making the setting seem realistic. Obviously the English is a little more modern than I imagine it was back then, but I never felt like any of the characters or events were transported from present day. One of my historical pet-peeves are books set hundreds of years ago with characters and events that are entirely modern (that is why I found the Most Powerful Women of the Middle Ages book so interesting)
Writing: The writing in in A Triple Knot was clear and visualizing striking. It did not blow me away with the awesomeness, but it was quite well done. I didn’t notice any grammatical errors even in my ARC copy.
A Triple Knot is everything a historical novel should be: historically accurate, engaging, and above all, fun! Even if you aren’t into historical fiction I recommend giving this one a try!
Who should read this book: Anyone who loves medieval history or anyone who was bored by history class.
