In the book, Alice first grows and shrinks several times, eventually creating a sea of her own tears. She also engages in a caucus race, breaks the rabbit’s house with her huge size, meets a creepy caterpillar, meets the Duchess who loves pepper, goes to a tea party with the Mad Hatter, plays croquet with the Red Queen, listens to the Mock Turtle and dances with him, gets accused of stealing tarts, stands on trial and then wins by declaring them all playing cards.

In the movie, they mix up characters and events from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Alice is determined to be the Alice that should slay the Jabberwocky, but the Red Queen tries to kill her. Alice is able to infiltrate the Red Queen’s palace with the help of the White Queen, and steal the sword that will kill the Jabberwocky. They fight and Alice wins. When she goes back home, she is apprenticed to a shipping merchant, because no self-respecting woman ever gets married.

Winner

The original Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the clear winner here. Although the story is quite trippy and confusing, at least Alice still acts like a little girl in the story. Alice as a crime-fighting adult just doesn’t have the same ring. I remember loving the book as a child, and I definitely think children are the book’s target audience. Adults always try to change stories to be more epic or meaningful that it was intended to be (see the failed movie Pan).

My favorite Alice in Wonderland movie (though it still has its faults), is this version from 1999. But I might have just seen it at the right time. The Caucus Race scene is my favorite. I find it dryly humorous.
