Last-Minute The Martian Costume (Lit Lovers Link Party)

Now that I have read The Martian, I am seriously excited to see the movie when I get a free evening. I loved the story and can’t wait to see it on the big screen.

This fall, I was excited to see all of the new Star Wars themed costumes that are coming out, but when I actually saw the selections for women, I was less than pleased. Women get to be sexy storm trooper in a skirt, sexy Darth Vader in a skirt, or sexy Leia. Needless to say, I am not a fan of any of those.

However, you can promote both geekery and books when you wear this super-simple, last-minute The Martian costume.

Here is a screen shot from the movie, courtesy of People Magazine.

Looking for a last-minute costume idea that isn't ridiculous? Why not embrace space travel and literature and dress in this last-minute The Martian costume?

Of particular note is the large amount of white, blue and orange on the space suits. You get to see what the different crew members are wearing. I’m assuming that the different chest emblems represent where they are from. I can’t tell where the woman in blue is from, just that she has something orange in her neck area, which I have chosen to represent with a necklace. My version of the costume is female, but it would be just as easy to find pieces for the male version as well.

The suit pants look like riding pants to me, which is what I have chosen to use as the base of the costume. We don’t see their feet, but it looks like their suits have bulky astronaut shoes when the go outside, but they may just wear socks inside. At any rate, I’ve given our costume lady tough boots for survival on Mars.

Last week,  I especially loved two posts. Verushka shared an interview with an Australian author who started her writing career late, which I thought was quite inspiring. And Skye shared a post about why all kids (and I believe adults as well) need to read diverse books.

Falling in Love with Books Again

Find out a bit more about me and why I’m falling in love with books again in this month’s Literary Junkies questions.

It's fall, which means back to reading! Read why I'm falling in love with books again in this fun bookish post! What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

Right now, I am reading a fun book that I have for a book tour coming up about a sort of romance/mystery that is just the thing to read in early September. I’m excited about it. There may even be a film in the works for it! It’s called Paris Time Capsule, if you are interested in reading it ahead of my review.

What books have you just picked up lately? It's fall, which means back to reading! Read why I'm falling in love with books again in this fun bookish post!

I’ve been picking up the new editions of Harry Potter to read with my daughter, who is finally old enough to appreciate them. We are basing all of our history this year on British History. It’s really just an excuse to read more Harry Potter, though.

Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?

I will read several books at a time, but I prefer to read them all at once. I just like living in one story for a while before moving on to another universe.

What makes you love a book?

I love books that are written well and capture the spirit of imagination. I’ll read things that are innovative and more classic themes, but I love beautiful writing and an engaging plot. You’ll always find me reading these kinds of books.

It's fall, which means back to reading! Read why I'm falling in love with books again in this fun bookish post! This one is totally random but Fall is just around the corner and we want to know…what’s your favorite cookbook?

My favorite cookbook purchase has to be The Redwall Cookbook. If you have ever read that children’s series, then you know how delicious all the food sounds! I really love the cookbook based on the recipes in the books. They are seasonally based, and it’s such fun! I tried making clotted cream apples from it once, and totally failed at the cream part, but the apples were quite tasty.

I’m curious about the cookbook question, too. What is your favorite cookbook?

Famous Quotes from Frankenstein: Lit Lovers Link Party

Frankenstein is one of the classic horror stories that has survived the ages. Readers love a tale of a crazy mad scientist and experiments gone wrong. A new movie adaptation of the classic tale will be released in November (which is kind of an odd time for a horror movie. Why not October?) and will focus more on the tale of the doctor than his monster, which should be interesting.

Frankenstein is also one of the few horror tales written by a woman that is still celebrated today. Mary Shelley’s creative ingenuity inspired thousands of other horror stories and is one of the most famous monster mad-scientists stories to date. That is a pretty impressive resume for a writer.

In honor of Mary Shelley and the new movie coming out, today’s Lit Lovers features famous quotes from Frankenstein.

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

12 Famous Quotes from Frankenstein that Summarize the Story in Less than 300 Words

What I like about old stories like this is how formal the writing is. Shelley uses a lot of “thees” and “thous” and her phrasing is magical. I appreciate how writing was more of an expressive art form back then than it is now.

If you don’t have time to read the whole novel, these famous quotes from Frankenstein summarize the main points.

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

“The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine.”

“I feel my heart glow with an enthusiasm which elevates me to heaven, for nothing contributes so much to tranquillize the mind as a steady purpose — a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.”

A mind of moderate capacity which closely pursues one study must infallibly arrive at great proficiency in that study.”

“Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”

“We are fashioned creatures, but half made up.”

“Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded.”

“How mutable are our feelings, and how strange is that clinging love we have of life even in the excess of misery!”

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.

“Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it.”

“‘Oh! Be men, or be more than men. Be steady to your purposes and firm as a rock. This ice is not made of such stuff as your hearts may be; it is mutable and cannot withstand you if you say that it shall not. Do not return to your families with the stigma of disgrace marked on your brows. Return as heroes who have fought and conquered and who know not what it is to turn their backs on the foe.'”

“I trembled, and my heart failed within me; when, on looking up, I saw, by the light of the moon, the daemon at the casement.”

“I looked upon the sea; it was to be my grave.”

Frankenstein is one of the best horror tales. But you don't have to read the entire story. These 12 famous quotes from Frankenstein sum it all up nicely.
