Ramona and Beezus
vs Beezus and Ramona
Plot:
Book: 11 or 12 year old Beezus (Beatrice) has an annoying little sister named Ramona. Ramona ruins Bezzus’ life, including ruining books, games, food and is annoying in general. Beezus finds Ramona very frustrating, but by the end of the book decides she’d rather have an annoying sister than none at all.
Movie: The movie follows more of Ramona’s story from her books when she was around 8 or 9. The adventures in the movie include Ramona’s bad picture day, her bad report card, the romance between her aunt and her friend’s uncle, her dad loosing a job and the time she vomits at school. All of these events are in the series, but none of them are actually in Beezus and Ramona.
Similarities: I felt like they did a good job of keeping the characters of the sisters in the movie. Ramona is a cute wild-child, while Beezus is a sedate older sister. Most of the events in the movie went about like I imagined them in the books.
Differences: The main differences between the book and movie is that the events are not actually from that book. The movie also has “imagination” sequences for Ramona, which were not really in the book, but I didn’t think they detracted from the events.
Winner: I have to say that the real book is the winner in this match. While the movie does a fairly good job, it is not quite enough like the stories to make it an option to skip reading them. The books span the time from the 1950s all the way to the 1990s, so it is interesting to see how the life of the family evolves fifty years in the book period of just four or five years.
