Writing Tip: Writing Place
For me to write anything that sounds remotely good or interesting, I usually have to focus my mind in a particular way and be located in a certain setting. For my daily writing I can usually tune out the rest of the world. However, for stories it takes more concentration that that. When I write a story, I have to be in a particular mindset and place. Typically, I like a completely silent location except for a familiar song playing softly. Usually the song choices are rather limited. I tend to like mellow music that I have listened to for years. It also helps if it is dark outside and if I am alone. I also prefer to write my first drafts by hand. The thoughts flow better for me that way. I think because there are no editing tools to distract me.
I think I need to work on artificially creating that environment and feeling otherwise I may never write again.
Is there a special place you like to write?
