This week I am focusing on things relating to the letter “B.”

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books of all time. Written by Charlotte Bronte, it is a story of a young girl who is an orphan who eventually becomes a governess and falls in love with her employer. This story was published during 1847 during a time when Gothic novels such as this one were very popular.

The story of the book is not the part that I like best. After all, pool girl who falls in love and eventually gets rich is not that original or interesting of a story. What I like about this story is the sly humor and fierce morality of the main character.

Other characters in the book are typical characters of that period seen in other stories such as Charles Dickens’ novels. But the truly unique character of Jane is what makes the book for me. Reading the story as a child I liked the romance of the story and Jane’s ability to stand up to her authority figures. But reading the story as an adult gave me more respect for the author than anything.

Jane is a modern woman. She would fit right in with today’s thinking about how women should act and control their lives. Coming from a time when women were largely repressed, I am intrigued by the strong character of Jane.

Anyway, because of this and the still relevant humor, I think Jane Eyre is a book that every young girl (and boys if they want) should read.
