Technology: CG or Hand Drawn Animation
This week is a week for differing from the usual format. Today, rather than writing about writing technology; which let’s face it, has not really changed in several thousand years, I am writing about movies.
In a way these things are related because what would a movie be without a written script?
Anyway, in light of the recent release of the Disney movie; The Princess and the Frog, which is hand-drawn animation, I would like to open a topic for discussion. Do you think that hand-drawn animated movies are dead?
Let’s consider some facts that I am basing solely off of my own opinions and observations:
My daughter seemed to care more for the hand-drawn animations when she was younger, but now seems to prefer the 3D effect that CG movies have. I think that a lot more can be done with a computer animated film because of the high level of detail that is present in this kind of film.
As an adult I feel a little less silly viewing a CG film. However, many people may prefer the “classic” feel of hand drawn movies.
I don’t know if one kind is more expensive than the other. My guess would be that the CG films are more expensive, based on the fact that very few children’s television programs are made in this animation style.
I think the only way to settle this question would be to measure the difference in profits from the Disney film Bolt and this new Princess and the Frog movie. Which can’t be done until the movie is released to DVD.
Which kind of animation do you prefer?
