I must confess, I did not read anything exciting this past week to review. What I have read thousands of times is Goodnight Moon.

As a children’s writer myself, I find this story very fascinating. I have not met a young child yet who did not love this story. In essence, this story is extremely simple. A small bunny goes to bed. He doesn’t want to, and stalls by saying goodnight to as many things as possible.

My daughter (3), is completely in love with this book and has been since the first time we read it to her about two years ago. It is intriguing to me how this story manages to remain such a favorite with everyone.

Is it because it is a ritual that happens to almost all children, every single night? Is it because the words are simple and easy to understand? Is it because there are more pictures than words? Perhaps it is because the pictures, although simple, contain a lot of depth and interest.

One thing that concerns me about the modern children’s story market is that publishes seem to look for stories that either communicate some kind of lesson, or that are about some imaginative tale. I sometimes wonder if many of the classic children’s stories would get published in today’s world. At any rate, stories like Goodnight Moon are rare in the current market.

Still, we always have the original as it continues to be published to this day.

Goodnight Moon was first published in 1947. It has sold over 4 million copies.
