Books like Game of Thrones (that you won’t have to wait for)
Waiting for that next Game of Thrones book? These books like Game of Thrones offer all of the epic fantasy with none of the wait.
The Accursed Kings Series
The Accursed Kings of books was first published in France and is the story of the real-life events that Game of Thrones is based on. If you love epic historical fiction, you will love this series. You will find many character similarities to GRR’s own characters in this series.
Deerskin
Deerskin is the most morbid fractured fairy tale story I know. It all begins when a dying queen makes her husband pledge to only marry someone as beautiful as she. The resulting answer to that demand is that the demented king tries to marry his own daughter. Naturally, terrible things ensue.
The Acacia Trilogy
The Acacia Trilogy is a morally grey fantasy world similar to GRRM’s own. However, it only takes three books to wrap up, which I am pretty fond of right now.
The First Law Series
The First Law series is described as a sort of westernesque fantasy, which sounds quite intriguing. This series carries a lot of violence but tempered with humor, which is exactly what most readers need in an epic fantasy series.
Chronicles of the Deryni
If you really want some classic high fantasy, you can’t go wrong with The Chronicles of The Deryni, which first began in the 1970s. It is still unfinished to some extent, in that books are still being written in the same universe, but the original story is complete in all its high fantasy glory.
Codex Alera
If you’re looking for a bit more modern interpretation/writing style for your epic fantasy, don’t neglect the Codex Alera series, which uses a magic system based on the elements. You’ll find this universe quite well thought out an immersive.
The Dark Tower Series
If you love epic fantasy and Stephen King, then you won’t want to miss the The Dark Tower series, which is as close to epic fantasy as Stephen King ever gets. This series of books follows the tale of The Gunslinger, who is a sort of immortal Western time lord, which is quite an interesting character to be featured in a fantasy series.
Prince of Nothing
If you want epic fantasy, don’t miss the The Prince of Nothing series which is at once typical high fantasy and completely original. The trilogy centers around a holy war, with unexpected fallout.

Quotes from The Game of Thrones
I fell out of like with Butcher at some point in the Harry Dresden series. He does urban fantasy okay for me, but his other work has never caught my interest. Your post about Abercrombie though makes me want to check that out!
I sometimes feel like really long series drag on forever and get boring, that could be what happened to you! But I tire easily of epic fantasy. Usually I have to read something else for a while between books.
