I’m in a reading slump.
I know what got me here. It’s several lackluster books that I’ve read in a row. Nothing that I have read recently quite seems worth the time it took to read the story. I’m feeling the same way about most movies and TV shows. Nothing feels original or interesting enough to commit to.
I have a few things that I like to try when I’m in a reading slump. Usually, these things are enough to jolt me out of my reading slump and get me excited again.
How to Get Out of a Reading Slump
This is what I do to shake off a reading slump; and I’ll be trying some of these post-haste.
Read an Old Favorite
I used to read a lot of classic books when I was younger, and I always find them comforting. I love children’s classics especially. The vocabulary and beautiful writing alone is usually enough to get me excited about reading again.
Find Something Innovative
I feel like a lot of what I’ve read has been lackluster and boring. Nothing has excited me. This is where innovative books can come in and really make a difference. They may be entirely out of my comfort zone, but they will not be boring.
Visit a Bookstore/Library
Nothing makes me more excited about reading than a new book haul. Something about seeing all the beautiful tomes of possibility along with the smell of paper and glue is magical. So many stories await! There is no time for reading slumps in a library.
Talk to a Fellow Book Lover
Books are more fun with friends. That is a fact. I’ve been neglecting my book buddies lately, which may be one reason why I feel burned out by books. Just one conversation with a friend about a book they love can be quite inspirational.
Talk about the Reading Slump
Now that I’ve reached the end of this post, I actually feel a little less slumpy. I’m ready to try the other options I talked about to get excited about reading again. Not reading books feels a lot like being sick and not wanting food. It hurts and makes you feel bad. It’s exciting to feel the hunger for books/food again when you feel better.
Just in case these efforts for how to get out of a reading slump aren’t enough for me, how do you get out of yours? Let me know and I’ll try them out.
