Want a fun last-minute and bookish Christmas decoration? Why not make a book tree?
The book tree is a simple, elegant-looking craft that requires almost no skill- except the basic common sense not to cut through your thumb (which I apparently lack). This project is simple and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Make your own book trees using the tutorial below!
DIY Christmas Book Page Tree
- Unwanted book (a book with a lot of text works best)
- Craft knife
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Acrylic paint (optional)
- Paintbrush (optional)
- Festive ribbon (optional)
Cut the book open along the spine. Each book tree takes about 60-80 pages. Cut your paper chunk into two sections of 30-40 pages each. For the smaller tree, I cut the pages into a square shape. For the larger tree, I left the pages rectangular.
Make the spine of the book go on the left, just as if you were reading the book. Fold down the top right corner until it is flush with the spine.
Do the same fold as before to make a triangle shape. Your fold with have a weird tail. Don’t worry about this just yet.
Fold the tail inside the folded pages so that the bottom of the page lies flat with the rest of the pages. You want the bottom of your tree to be flat so that it can stand upright.
Repeat this process with the remaining pages. Be careful, because sometimes the pages want to break away from the spine. I found it easiest to kind of hold the pages to the glue on the spine for extra stability. When you are done with the first set of pages, repeat with the other set.
Line the two folded triangle halves together and glue the spines together with hot glue.
Spread out the pages so that the tree opens and looks like a rounded tree. You may want to place a dot of glue to connect some of the more stubborn pages.
If you want to give the tree a festive color, continue with the directions. Otherwise, you are done!
Water down acrylic paint in the color of your choice (originally, I chose green). Paint it onto just the very outside edge of the tree pages. Tie some festive ribbon into a bow and hot glue it to the top of the tree. You could also use a star or any other small item to top the tree if you wanted.
Now your festive tree is done! Display it with pride!
