The romance genre is large and vast, because many women love a good feel-good story about impossible love and getting swept off their feet. But for every good romance novel, there are 100 bad ones. How do you know which are the best? Choose a book from a master, of course! The authors in this list are some of the best modern romance authors in the entire world.
Men don’t often write romance, or excel at it; but somehow, Nicholas Sparks has figured out a way to please the romance-lovers of the world. With books like The Notebook, Dear John, and A Walk to Remember, Nicky is a winning romantic author. His books offer a cleaner version of romance as well, which is somewhat of an oddity among modern romance.
Jennifer says of her writing “I was never conscious of writing category or single title or paperback or hardcover. You just have to tell the truest story you know.” That is perhaps why her stories stand out amid a sea of romance. Her story to why she became a romance writer is also rather storybook-like itself; as a PHD student she read 100 men’s adventure novels and 100 women’s romance novels to determine the differences between male and female writing. She fell in love with romance along the way, and began her own stories.
The Huffington Post calls Susan’s books the “gateway drug to the whole [romance] genre.” She writes books that are heartwarming, witty, and sexy. Her books go beyond the surface of romance, which is one of the great things about her romances. Her writing style is typical romance, so if you are looking for an old-fashioned tale of high stakes romance, Phillips is your woman.
Rachel Gibson is one of the most acclaimed romance writers in the genre today. She has received many awards for her books, including a RITA from the Romance Writers of America. Her books focus on funny, upbeat romances that have mostly all topped the national bestseller lists.
Sophie is from the UK and is the author of the book-turned-movie series Shopaholic. She also writes under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. Her novels are breezy, fun, and full of mostly uncomplicated romantic flair- the perfect beach read.
No list of contemporary romance authors could be complete without Nora Roberts. She is one of the leading women in the field of modern romance and has been since 1981 when she wrote her first novel. She has written over 200 books and was the very first author put into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. With Nora, you will find passionate books filled with love, longing, and classic romance novel content.
Dark Witch: Book One of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
The Perfect Hope: Book Three of the Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy (The Inn Trilogy) (Better than the first, apparently?)
Sarah Dessen is sort of the Nora Roberts for the teen set, I suppose- although classifying authors like that seems a little unfair. She wrote the two short novels that made up the contents of the Mandy Moore movie “How to Deal,” which was as full of angsty late 1990s stuff as you would want there to be. Her books focus more on teen romance issues featuring realistic portrayals of young love.
With Robyn, you also get more classic romance with sweeping adventure and somewhat impossible story lines; but the fun is always there. Susan Phillips apparently said of Robyn that she had “great storytelling” and “beautifully drawn characters.” She is a writer who offers series romances – which I personally like, because I hate to see characters fall by the wayside after their novel is ended.
