Today’s banned book is Little Women. My sources didn’t really say why it was banned, just that maybe it was because it had anti-feminist themes. It could also be because of the fairly Christian discussions and refrerences in the story. I don’t believe that it is on any banned books lists today.
In the book, the story is about four sisters who are trying to survive while their dad is away in the Civil War. The family has recently lost money (I can’t remember if it was because of bad investments or what), and the girls must work together to build a home. The mother does something, which I forget (maybe it was house-cleaning?), Meg teaches children, Jo helps out her old aunt, and Beth helps keep house. Amy pretty much does nothing. I’ve always wondered, if the girls were based on her real-life sisters or friends, did the inspiration behind Amy get upset at the author for painting her as such as useless person?
Anyway, along the way, the girls must learn to make the best of things, which they do by having picnics, making up plays, visiting the neighbor boy next door, and visiting relatives. Somewhat tragic events also occur, with Beth getting scarlet fever and Amy nearly drowning.
When I was a kid, I loved Little Women. It was one of my favorite stories to read. However, I never liked any of the movies nearly as well. All of the movies seemed to focus on the parts of the stories that I didn’t care for, such as the tragedy or the romance between Meg and John. Many of the movie versions seem to transform the story into a rather depressing view of the Civil War, which I never really thought was the point. I always thought that the story was about making the best of life no matter the circumstances, but I guess movies find that a boring view.
At any rate, the books in this series are much better than the movie!
