So, apparently the BBC version of this story is forever long. It has 4 parts and each are about an hour. I only watched the first part so far. In the movie, every character seems to be more exaggerated than they are in the story. Margaret is more snooty, Mr. Thornton is more angry and mean, and the people in the town are even ruder.
So far, the story has progressed to the point at which Margaret and Mr. Thornton hate each other. She really dislikes how he mistreats people- and he actually does, because he beat one of his workers up. I don’t remember reading that in the book.
Margaret’s parents are more loving in the movie. They don’t avoid each other like they do in the book. Her mother attended the cousin’s wedding, which didn’t happen in the book. Her dad also seems like a more likable character in the movie. So it kind of seems that the main characters are less likable, and the supporting characters are more likable.
There is no mention of her brother in the movie. I don’t know if they plan to bring him in later or what, but he isn’t there now. Mr. Thornton also has a sister in the movie, and I don’t remember her being there in the book, but it’s possible I got confused while reading. At any rate, so far, I don’t like the movie nearly as much, which is about what I expected.
More tomorrow, or in a few days. This story kind of depresses me, so I may not be in a big hurry to watch it.
