Review: Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

November 7, 2011 by Meet Brenda 2 Comments

Book: Gregor The Overlander
Author: Suzanne Collins
Year Published: 2004
Genre: Children’s adventure
Overall Rating: 4 stars
Target Audience: 4th grade readers and older children
Romance: Slight hints between Gregor and Luxa
Setting: Under New York City
Characters: Gregor, his sister Boots, a giant cockroach, giant rats, underland people including Luxa and giant bats,

Plot: Gregor’s family has a lack of funds because his father has been missing for several months. His mother works hard, but they never have quite enough. Gregor has to take on responsibilities, such as laundry. Once day, he does the laundry with his two year old sister, Boots. She finds a large hole in the wall and falls down it. Gregor goes after her. When they land at the bottom, they find themselves in an underground world full of people, giant bugs, giant rats and giant bats. Gregor finds out he is at the heart of a prophecy and must help the underlanders defeat the evil rats and find the fate of his father.

Thoughts: I like this book. I think the characters are fun. I actually chuckled a few times when reading this. I like the adventurous feel. As crazy as the story is, in context it seems somewhat believable. I think most children should like this story. It could be a fun read-aloud story for parents to read to children.

[…] needs to be a movie. Not every book should become a movie. However, I would definitely go see the Gregor movies if they were ever made. I would love to see some epic bat battles on a movie […]
