Every time I went to review a book or look for suggestions, this book would pop up. I ignored it for a long time because the premise seemed boring to me. However, once I found out it was by Suzanne Collins, who wrote the Gregor the Overlander series that I quite enjoy, I decided to try it. Free two-day shipping on Barns and Noble that day also helped me decided.
Anyway, I read it over Christmas break. I have to agree with all the reviews and hype that the book is good. I enjoyed the story, and I was unsure at the end, how the character would make her decision about her life, which I like. If I know exactly how a book will go, I get a little bored. This book is unusual, in that although it is a teen book and there are a lot of romance elements, that is not the main focus of the story.
The main character, Katniss, is chosen to fight to the death with 12 or 11 other contestants, one of which is a boy that she already knows. While she does kill people and there is a lot of violence in the story, it is presented in a way that seems plausible without being completely disgusting.
I recommend this book for children over 12 and any adults who want to read something different. I give the book four stars.
