Eragon is a story about a young boy and a dragon that somehow get roped into saving the world together. Christopher Paolini, the author of the story started writing this book when he was 14 or 15, and to me it shows. The book reminds me of a story that my brother Bryan wrote when he was 11 heavily modeled after The Lord of the Rings.
There is almost no originality in the story of Eragon at all. Even some of the names are reminiscent of characters from LOTR. Arya the female elf in particular stands out as an almost direct copy of the elf Arwen from LOTR. Even the name of the book itself isn’t original as it is the word “Dragon” with the “D” replaced by an “E.”
However, I will admit that the series gets better and more original as the books progress. Obviously Christopher Paolini is a much better writer in his 20s than he was when he was 14.
Overall, I feel like anyone who wants to read a good fantasy story should read some classic fantasy like Lord of the Rings, or A Song of Ice and Fire, or The Wheel of Time series before reading any of the Inheritance Cycle. However, the story is easy to read and understand.
